Farewell, 2023

Dear 2023:

I am not going to beat around the bush, 2023.  I am glad to see you go.

You cost me a lot of money during your 365 days here: major repairs to the Silver Bullet, major repairs to the water leak, minor repairs to the kitchen sink and the bathroom, a whole garage roof replacement, a bathroom renovation; I could go on but I will stop here.  In your defense, I am thankful that I had the money to pay for all of those expenses.

You also cost me a dear friend - not their physical death, but the death of our friendship. In August, a very close and long-time friend said he was (and I quote) "cutting off" a few of his friends; unfortunately I was one of them. It was all on him - it wasn't because of something I did.  This really hurt me, and honestly, I am still hurt over it. I saw him this fall when we both were at a funeral home visitation at the same time.  I was surprised that he spoke to me - he didn't ask how I was; instead his only words to me were asking how my dad was doing.  And as I left the funeral home, he caught up with me and gave me a hug. But once again, in your defense 2023, you brought me together with two new friends.

Goodbye, 2023.  I am hoping your predecessor will be easy on me.

Covid 19 Update

Once again, I will estimate that a fourth of the shoppers and workers at the grocery store were masked up today.  In fact, it might be a bit more than a fourth.

I heard from two friends that tested positive for Covid a couple of days after Christmas.  Both of them had their vaccines and boosters.  They both said that they didn't feel very bad - but still have been staying away from people just because.

Once again, stay safe.

Thank You, Weatherazzi

The Weatherazzi here are calling for a dusting of snow late tonight/early tomorrow.  I'm sure this is driving everyone into a frenzy to get to the grocery for milk and bread.  I'm sure glad I didn't need anything from the grocery store today because I'm sure it would be a madhouse.

Stay tuned for a weather update.

What The What?

When I found out that our local Staples was closing mid-January, I went up there two weeks ago to stock up on my favorite Parker pen refills and other things they had on sale.  One thing I wanted was a pack of paper for my small 5 x 7 inch binder I use for taking notes from church's Sunday sermons.  They were out of the paper, and weren't getting more in the store.  I forgot about it until a few days ago, when I went online to Staples website and ordered a pack.  It was only $1.89 with free shipping.  A great deal.  Fast forward to yesterday when it arrived.  Let me remind you it was a small pack of paper and the box that it was in could have held two regular sized shoe boxes.  I just shook my head as I opened it up.  Surely Staples could have sent it in a padded or even unpadded envelope instead of a big box.  Oh well.

Christmas Review

I apologize for not posting the past couple of days.  But the Old Man and I had a great Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

For Christmas Eve, we had our family traditional snack supper -- lots of big peel and eat shrimp, cheeses, veggie tray and chips and dips.   For our Christmas dinner, we also had our traditional meal - green bean casserole, potato salad, ham, and fruit salad.

We've had a great Boxing Day today, and later on I will be fixing breakfast for supper - eggs, bacon, biscuits and fruit salad.

So all in all, Christmas 2023 was great. The Old Man was happy with two new shirts and a new pair of pants, and I was happy with my Oral B rechargeable toothbrush.

We are thankful to be blessed.

Covid 19 Update

I've heard of two more relatives that have Covid - my second cousin and his wife both have it.  At least they have it at the same time.

At the grocery yesterday, I still say my estimate of a fourth of the shoppers and employees were masked up, including yours truly.

I'm sure that a lot more people will be getting Covid with all of the Christmas gatherings being held in the next few days.

Stay safe.

A Long Winter's Nap

Me and the Old Man were worn out yesterday after four fun-filled days of visiting with my Favorite Cousin and her Dear Husband. In fact, we were so worn out we both went to bed at 9:30 last night.  We both had a great night's sleep, and still got up at our normal time of 8:30.  We are both refreshed and ready for Christmas.

The Party Has To End

My Favorite Cousin and her Dear Husband left at noon today to head back home to northern Indiana.  The Old Man and I think this was the best Christmas visit we've had from them so far.  That is not to say the other visits were bad; this visit was a day longer than they normally stay, so we had more time to fit in more fun and visiting.

We hated to see them pull out of the driveway today, but we are already looking forward to their end-of-January birthdays visit.

A good time was sure had by all.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

My Favorite Cousin and her Dear Husband came down from up north (LaFayette, IN) Sunday afternoon and the Christmas festivities are in full swing.  I made sure I had everyone's favorite adult beverages and plenty of homemade Chex mix on hand.  And for the record, the Dear Husband said I make the best Bloody Mary ever.  But I digress.  Yesterday we spent the day talking and laughing, and then we piled in the Silver Bullet and went to our favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner.  When we got home, we all played a cut-throat game of Louisville-Opoly (the Louisville version of Monopoly).  When the game ended, yours truly was declared the winner.

Once again, a good time was had by all.

Covid 19 Update

Once again, I would estimate that about a fourth of the shoppers and workers at my Kroger grocery store were masked up yesterday.  And a friend's travel plans had to be changed when her son called her yesterday morning to let her know he just tested positive for Covid.  Needless to say, she won't be traveling to visit her son for a couple of weeks.

Stay safe.

Step It Up Saturday

My Favorite Cousin and her Dear Husband had planned to come down Monday evening for their annual Christmas visit.  But due to some onforseen circumstances, she called today to ask if it would be OK for them to come down tomorrow afternoon after they get out of church.  That put me in bust-a-move mode.  I had planned to sweep and mop on Sunday evening, but that stepped up to this morning.  I got it all done, went to the grocery store, and finished a few things around the house in preparation for their visit.  As I type this, I'm tired and am going to my recliner for an hour or two of rest.  I know that makes me sound like and old grandma, but it is what it is.

Flashback Friday

After being able to find one of the few small live Christmas trees in the south end yesterday, today was the day to decorate it.  I'm not ashamed to say that I dreaded it.  I thought back to all of the years that my Sweet Mother would decorate our Christmas tree.  She did the majority of the decorating in the early mornings before me and the Old Man had gotten up for work.

Today's decorating didn't go so well; I sure could have used my Sweet Mother here to decorate the little tree because I sure had trouble.  But I digress.  The tree is decorated, and the lights are working, and best of all - it came on at 4:00 like I had the timer set for.

Merry Christmas.

It Will Begin To Look A Lot More Like Christmas

We had a situation here at The Compound this week.  I was unable to find a small 2-3 foot live Christmas tree like I've found the past three years.  I called four different Krogers (where I'd bought them before) and they all said they didn't get any this year.  I called all of the big box stores, nurseries and other places and had no luck.  But something told me to go Home Depot.  Keep in mind I called and they said they didn't have any.  I sure scored when I went there and found about a dozen of them still in stock.  And the lady what checked me out gave me 50% off!!!  Score.

Update From The Compound

The Old Man and I were able to get to our haircut appointments this morning.  His back was really hurting him, but he made it there and back home safely.  Now we will look spiffy for Christmas.

Covid 19 Update

At the grocery store yesterday, I noticed a lot more shoppers were masking up than they have in previous weeks.  By my estimate, I'd say a fourth of the shoppers and employees were wearing masks.

On a related note, the Alabama cousin's wife has Covid for the fourth time.

Stay safe.

Who Knew? Evidently, Not Me

Wednesday evening, the Old Man wanted a snack, and out of the blue he asked for Chex Mix.  Let me say that he's never asked for Chex Mix before; in fact, he's said repeatedly when I offer him some "I don't care for it like you do."  That having been said, I told him I would make a batch. Needless to say I bought all of the ingredients last Saturday at the grocery but hadn't taken time to make it.  So yesterday afternoon, I made a big batch of it.

There are few smells coming from the kitchen that are more pleasing and enticing than homemade Chex Mix baking in the oven.  I think I would buy a Chex Mix candle if they sold any.  But I digress.  The Old Man was happy last night with Chex Mix to go with his Scotch.

Update From The Compound

Luckily for us, the plumber was able to get here Monday afternoon.  After about three hours of work, the shower is draining like it should, and the toilet is not leaking and is also working like it should.  I was afraid to look at the bill after listening to them use the snake - it sounded like a jackhammer.  But I digress.  The check I had to write wasn't as big as I thought it would be, thank goodness.

Tis The Season

Yesterday was a busy day here at The Compound.  I stepped out of my comfort zone and hosted my first luncheon.  Two of my good friends from my Bible Study Fellowship group came and had lunch with me and the Old Man.  I fixed the easiest thing I could - vegetable soup.  And both friends carried on and on about it and had me give them the recipe before they left.

It was a great way to sort of kick off the Christmas season.  We had the family room and outside decorated so things were very festive.

It was a great day and I am so glad the Old Man really enjoyed it.  It gave him other people to talk to besides me.

Happy National Cookie Day

TWIT and I would like to wish you, faithful readers, a very Happy National Cookie Day.

This public service announcement has been given to you early enough so you have time to either make or buy some cookies this afternoon and celebrate.  I know the Old Man and I will be having cookies tonight with some egg nog.

Enjoy!

Another Check To Write

To make the long story short, the drain in the walk in shower installed a couple of months ago isn't draining.  Luckily I was able to take a quick shower today before it flooded the bathroom.  We're waiting for the plumber to call tomorrow to hopefully be able to get here quickly to fix it.

Surprisingly I'm not stressed about it.  I just want it fixed.

Stay tuned.

Security Tip Saturday

I made my weekly trip to Kroger's today, and once again, I was amazed at how women are just not aware.  I saw three women leave their grocery carts with their purses in them while they wandered around shopping.

For my female Faithful Readers, please don't do that.  Keep your purse with you at all times, or better yet, don't take your purse in and put it in the shopping cart.

Stay safe.

Flashback Friday

It seems that White Castle fans are all
in an uproar because they switched from Big Red to Barq's cream soda.  Personally, the Old Man and I think they taste the same.  But I digress.  It made me think back to the days when we had Tiger Red cream soda.

I remember getting these at the little market two houses down from The Compound back when I was a kid.  I honestly don't remember getting Big Red there, even though the label on Big Red says "since 1937."  All I remember is Tiger Red sure tasted good - maybe even better than Big Red or Barqs.

Hurry Up And Wait

I came home early this morning from my BSF group meeting because the heating and air conditioning man was coming today for the annual winter furnace check.  They said they'd be here after 12:30.  As I typ this it is 4:00 and still no phone call or appearance by the guy.  As sure as I would get supper going shortly he would show up.  I hope the Old Man can hold off his hunger for another hour or so in hopes they will be here.

It's almost a waste - they come every fall and spring to check. But needless to say, we have had the furnace going for over a month now, and the same with the spring with the air conditioning.  I'm just glad this is included in our maintenance plan, so I won't have to write a big check today.

Guess I'll go back to my recliner and wait for him to show up.

P.S.  I'm frustrated about this, but at the same time I am thankful that we have a fairly new furnace that is working well right now while others have furnaces that aren't.   Nuff said.

Cyber Monday Review

I did some shopping yesterday on Cyber Monday, but it was for something that I needed - a wall charger for my Fit Bit.  I got a good deal on it, and it will be delivered tomorrow.  Can't ask for much more than that.

Cold Kentucky Rain

I was quoting the Elvis song, Kentucky Rain.  For the past two hours we have been having a cold Kentucky rain.  I know this because I made a few trips out to the big garbage can in preparation for garbage day tomorrow.  As I type this, the Old Man is wrapped up in his Snuggie watching football and reading.  As soon as I post this, I think I will get my Snuggie on and get in my chair and read and watch football, too.   Supper is fairly easy tonight - leftovers from our Thanksgiving dinner.  So I just have to time it all right with heating up things on the stove, in the oven and microwave.  The Old Man wasn't thrilled with this menu choice, but I reminded him that we paid for the big meal and didn't want to waste it.  Nuff said.

Black Friday Review

Yes, I was one of the millions out shopping yesterday on Black Friday.  But it was for things that we needed.  I went to Tractor Supply to get Marge a bag of feed, and got two nice shirts for me and The Old Man which were half off, along with a Christmas ornament (Santa riding a chicken), which was also on sale.  Then I went across the road to Harbor Freight and stocked up on AA and AAA batteries, which were also half off.  I also ended up getting something for my Favorite Cousin and her husband for Christmas, which was also half off.  And other than ordering a couple of presents on Amazon yesterday, that was the extent of my Black Friday shopping.

Luckily, those two stores were no more crowded than on any other day.  But there was one frustrating thing I had to deal with - there was only one cashier working at both stores.  You'd think they would have had at least two check-out lanes open, given it being Black Friday.  But other than that, my Black Friday shopping was uneventful.

Thanksgiving Review

The Old Man and I had a great Thanksgiving.  We watched the traditional Macy's parade and the dog show, and watched football.  Our dinner courtesy of Cracker Barrel was great. We were too full for pumpkin pie, but we will have a slice with some egg nog this afternoon.

Getting back to the football games yesterday, the highlight was the halftime performance by Dolly Parton at the Dallas Cowboys game.  All I can say is it was awesome.  I wish they would have had her perform at the Super Bowl halftime.

Thanksgiving Eve

It's Thanksgiving Eve, and I'm positive women (and some men) everywhere are working on their Thanksgiving Dinner this afternoon.

When I was a kid, Thanksgiving Eve dinner was almost as good as Thanksgiving Dinner.  Grandma would be too busy getting things ready for Thanksgiving Dinner, and on Thanksgiving Eve, my mom and dad would stop on their way home from work at Eddie's Seafood House and bring home their awesome fish and fries for us for Wednesday night supper.   Back then, we didn't get fast food every other day like a lot of us do today - a trip to Eddie's or even McDonald's was few and far between.  So it was a special occasion.

Once again, Cracker Barrel is fixing our Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, so I have no excuse not to cook tonight.  But it's still early - give me an hour or two to come up with an excuse.

Update On The Old Man

The Old Man had his annual check-up today with his cardiologist.  We were thrilled when the doctor said to keep on doing what he's been doing and he would see him in a year!

I am so thankful that he has such competent, wise and caring doctors.

Here We Go Again

Once again, it seems that we have another Chex cereal shortage.  I had intended to buy three boxes of Chex cereal at the grocery yesterday to go in my popular Chex Mix, but the only flavors they had in stock were Corn Chex and Cinnamon Chex.  They didn't even have any store brand versions, either.  I will keep checking, and will try a couple other stores in hopes of finding what I need.  You would think that General Mills would step up production on the cereal in the fall since their Chex Mix is so popular.

Stay tuned.

Great News

Things have been crazy here at The Compound, with the oven being out of commission, and other things going on.  But I want to give some good news for a change.

We got a call two nights ago that my Alabama Cousin's cancer is gone!  There was no sign of the tumor when they did a scan on Sunday!!! If we would have done a cartwheel, the Old Man and I surely would have done one to celebrate.  We can't thank everyone enough for praying for him for the past few months.

The Black Cloud Is Back

It's not been a good weekend, Faithful Readers.

First of all, my Alabama Cousin had to have surgery this morning as a result of complications from his esophageal cancer.  The surgery went well, and we are hoping and praying for relief and recovery for him, and for his body healing.

Second, the Old Man's hip was hurting bad again today.  He was really bummed, as he'd hoped to feel good enough to go to church today.  But it was meant to be.  He spent most of the day in his recliner with the heating pad.

I could go on and talk about a few more not-so-good things, but I will stop now.

Happy Veterans Day

TWIT and I would like to wish a very happy Veterans Day to all of those who proudly served, especially to the Old Man.  He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and was stationed at a base in Kodiak, Alaska.

Last night, we were talking about today being Veterans Day, and he was reminiscing about his stint in the Navy, and started telling me some good stories about that time.  The funniest story was about during  arctic survival training.  They had to build shelters using limbs, brush and whatever they could find.  And they had to eat the then-named C Rations.  He added that if they could catch any edible animal or fish, they could eat it. But I digress.  He explained about the C Rations, and said his favorite was spaghetti and meatballs.  He said that each box would have the main entree, some hard crackers, a side dish of usually canned peaches, a packet of hot chocolate or instant coffee, some hard candy and a little can of jelly.  He said that one evening while they were eating, they heard a small explosion and ran to the direction of the commotion to see what was going on.  When they got to the camp site, they saw some of the Navy guys laughing. It seems one of the guys wanted to heat up his can of jelly, and it exploded.   The Old Man said that never happened again.

To the Old Man and other veterans, I thank you for your service.

Flashback Friday

At our local Dollar Tree, I saw these awesome pens on the rack.  I immediately filled my basket up with a bunch of them.  Back in the day, these pens were the equivalent of the iPhones today for the kids.  Every kid wanted one of these cool multi-colored pens. You were in the upper echelon of school kids if you had one of these pens.

I filled my basket up with a bunch of the pens to give to the members of my BSF group. When I handed them out this week at our BSF meeting, it did my heart good to hear a few of the group members say "I had this pen when I was a kid."

Nuff said.

Summer Was Still Here

I had one of the worst night's sleep last night in the past few months.  It was hot (yes, hot - not warm) in my bedroom, even with my ceiling fan going on high and one of my windows opened.  At one point, I got up and quietly went out on the back porch for a few minutes to cool off.  It helped a bit but as soon as I got back in bed, I was warm again.  Thank goodness it is cooler today. I am hoping for a much better night's sleep tonight.

Stay tuned.

Summer Is Back

Summer is back today here in the Ville.  As I type this, it is 83 degrees here at The Compound.  That can  only mean that tomorrow it will be in the 30's or 40's.  But it sure is a beautiful sunny day today.  Although it is windy, and the leaves are sure falling to beat the band.  But I digress.  We will take any beautiful, not-cold days we can get in November.

A Great Monday

It has been a great Monday, faithful readers.  First of all, the Old Man was feeling better today and getting around much better.  Second, I drove up to the county clerk's office 10 minutes away and saved some money dropping off the check for the property taxes - they wanted a crazy fee if you paid online with a credit or debit card.  I was more than happy to drive up there to save some money.  It's not like I had anything to do today.  While there, I went next door to the Super Kroger and got some cheese from their cool cheese department and some fresh fruit.  Once back home, I went out to the back porch to read and enjoy this awesome 70's temps we have today.

It was a great day.  And I am looking forward to an equally great day tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

A Good Time Was Had By All

The Old Man's two favorite (and remaining) cousins came up from The Country aka Breckinridge County today to visit.  His Cousin Wayne and wife Joni went by Elizabethtown on the way up and picked up Wayne's sister Cathy.  We had the best time talking, reminiscing and laughing.  They brought us a late lunch/early supper from Cracker Barrel, so that was a bonus.  But the best part was just being together.  Every day we thank the Lord for their love and concern for us.  And we are already planning the next visit!

Christmas Time's A Coming

I was coming home from a trip to the library yesterday morning, and saw the first 2023 Christmas season decorations out in a yard.  They had inflatables and lights around the roof top.  They definitely get the distinction of being #1 in decorating in our area this year.

Good News/Not So Good News

I spent some time this morning going over my checking account and budget, and was happy that I was able to pay off some credit cards and bills.  That happiness was short lived when I got the property tax bill this afternoon.  But it is what it is.  I am proud of myself for budgeting the property tax bill, and will pay it tomorrow and get it off of my back.  I was surprised to see that the county sheriff's office charges a 5% charge if you pay by debit or credit card.  Sorry - I will write out an old school check and mail it tomorrow.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

It's not officially winter yet, but you can't prove it here in the Ohio Valley.  The past two mornings when I got up it was 29 degrees.  I had to break up ice yesterday on Marge's waterer and was thankful the water heater was working this morning.  I left early and on my travels I saw lots of frost on the ground.  And I also saw lots of leaves falling.

But I still like the cooler weather, I have to say.  I just hope we don't have a repeat of what we had at Christmas last year with sub-zero temps.

Stay tuned.

Happy Halloween

Hard to believe this picture was taken ten years ago tonight.

TWIT and I wish everyone a very happy and safe Halloween.

Monday, Monday

Yesterday morning was the first morning since Thursday that the Old Man wasn't almost in tears as he was getting dressed.  He said he felt "a little" better. And yesterday he was able to get to the bathroom without using his walker.  So as of this morning, I think he has turned the corner. Thursday, Friday and Saturday he didn't to much except nap in his recliner; yesterday he was back to his "normal" self - talking, cutting up and reading.  This morning, my friend is bringing Waffles the therapy dog to visit him - he said he is looking forward to their visit.

Stay tuned.

Grocery Store Observance

As I was waiting for the rain to ease up before going into Kroger this morning, I saw three men come out of the store in the pouring rain, each carrying flowers wrapped in 2 or 3 grocery bags to keep them from getting soaked.

This led me to think of two obvious things: either it was their anniversary and they procrastinated buying flowers, or else they screwed up and needed to give their wife or significant other some flowers to get out of the dog house.

Flashback Friday

A couple of weeks ago, the Old Man asked me to look for a Clark candy bar for him.  He said they were one of his favorites, but that Butterfinger would do in a pinch.  But I digress.  I did some research and found that they don't make the Clark candy bar, but the company makes a version of Clark cups -- similar to a Reese Cup.

I checked in every drug store, grocery store and convenience store in the area and couldn't find any.  So I did what anyone else would do - got some from Amazon.  They should be delivered tomorrow.

I hope the Old Man will enjoy them as much as he enjoyed their predecessor the Clark Bar.

Stay tuned.

Thursday, Thursday

It's not been a very good day here at The Compound.  The Old Man's right hip has been killing him since he got up this morning.  When we got up, I saw him making his way slowly to his recliner using his walker, and it hurt me to see he was almost in tears because it hurt so bad.  Thanks to prayers, extra strength Tylenol and a lidacane patch this afternoon, he is resting comfortably in his recliner.  He was able to make it from his chair to the kitchen table and back to the chair after having a snack earlier this afternoon - for which we are very thankful.

We have hair cut appointments tomorrow, and I had told him I would take him out to breakfast afterward if he was feeling OK.  I pray he will be able to make it.  If not, then we always have other days for haircuts and breakfasts out.

Wishful Wednesday

A friend and her husband went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lasts week, and she brought me back a very cool gift - a shot glass to add to my big collection of shot glasses.  This one has pictures of different electric guitars on the glass, and says "Never too old to rock and roll."  That is my wish today.  Even though it's been years since I picked up a guitar, I do hope I am never too old to rock and roll.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

A friend of ours that lives in Alberta, Canada emailed today - saying they had over a foot of snow last night.  I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was supposed to be upper 70's here for the next week.

Stay tuned.

Monday, Monday

It was a very peaceful and drama-free Monday -- something that I am always thankful for.  I ran a couple of errands, and the Old Man and I spent time in our recliners reading this afternoon.  It's days like this that really make me enjoy my retirement.

Thank You, Pizza Hut

I went to the grocery this morning and when I got home, I was not in the mood to cook anything, nor to go out and get anything.  I did the next best thing - I got on my phone and ordered a thin crust Super Supreme pizza from Pizza Hut.  It was delivered to us in less than a half an hour.  The Old Man and I grubbed out and really enjoyed the hot, perfect pizza for an early supper.  We also ordered a chocolate chip cookie for later tonight.

I know I am odd - I think Pizza Hut's thin crust is better than any other pizzas we have ordered.  I am glad they are consistent.  And will definitely order them again.

Time to get back in my recliner and be a full, happy slug until later when we have our cookie.

I love retired life.

Flashback Friday

Last weekend, the Old Man mentioned one of his favorite foods when he was a kid - salt rising bread.  I remember him talking about it, and also remember Gram fixing some when I was a kid.  I made a quick call and found out that a local bakery (that was actually the original first stop in my Wednesday Triple Crown run) had it.  So I was only happy to stop there Wednesday morning and get him a loaf.  He had a slice with supper Wednesday and he said it was as good as he remembered it.

I did a bit of research and found out salt-rising bread as we know it today was developed by colonists in North America — pioneer women who were isolated in the Appalachian Mountains with wheat but no access to yeast, and who needed to make bread for their families. They found that a mix of flour and milk left in a warm place would bubble up overnight, and the foamy mixture would help the bread rise.Though no yeast was used, some early recipes called for saleratus, a precursor to baking soda that was manufactured in the late 1700s and often used in biscuit and cake recipes. The oldest recipe for the bread Brown has found dates back to West Virginia in 1778.

Even at the height of its popularity, the method wasn't completely reliable.  A rise without yeast is so finicky that it has been surrounded with its own superstition and mythology.  Some bakers were told to never slam a door if a salt-rising starter was going on in the house, to not let children run around, or to not get in a fight with their husbands.  If I had a dime for every time Gram told me not to run through the house when she had a cake in the oven, I'd be driving a 2023 Corvette.  But I digress. Some were told it would work only if the milk used was still warm from the cow.

All I know is that it sure made the Old Man happy.  That's all that matters.

Welcome Back, Sunshine

After the thick fog burned off this morning, we finally got to see the sun.  It had been almost a week since we'd seen sunshine here at The Compound.  It sure was a welcome sight.  The morning started off pretty cool, but the sun made everything better.

Let's hope for a repeat tomorrow.

And The Skies Are Cloudy All Day

I can't tell you when we've seen the sunshine here in the Ville the past few days.  At least it's not raining or drizzly, but it sure is cloudy, gloomy, and cool.  I am hoping to see some sunshine this week, but not counting on it.  Until then, we will keep on keeping on here at The Compound.

Happy National Pasta Day

TWIT and I would like to wish you, faithful readers, a very happy National Pasta Day.  We are doing our part here at The Compound to celebrate - I have a pot of spaghetti sauce on simmering and later tonight we will have spaghetti and some good Texas toast, along with a glass of our favorite Banty Hill red wine to wash it down.

It's not too late - even if you are working and won't be in the kitchen until later tonight, you will still have time to open up a jar of Prego sauce and get some spaghetti boiling in the pot.

So Much For That

Yesterday, there was a partial eclipse and for those lucky enough to have clear skies, it looked like a third of the sun had been cut out.  Unfortunately for us in the 'Ville, it was cloudy and drizzly all day.  Supposedly in April, there will be a total eclipse, and the weatherazzi said we should (key word) have a perfect view of it here in the 'Ville.

Stay tuned.

Flashback Friday

Last night, the Old Man and I were talking about Gram's awesome banana pudding.  I told him that I would be willing to try (key word) to make some if (another key word) he would make the meringue. I went to the old recipe box and found Gram's little black notebook full of handwritten recipes.  He and I guessed that the little black book was at least 70 years old.

Each recipe was handwritten in Gram's perfect writing.  She had the prettiest handwriting of just about anyone I know.  If someone had given her the recipe, at the top of the page or at the bottom she had written that person's name.  It was a cool time of reminiscing as I thought about some of the women that had shared some of the recipes.

And I only had to look through a few pages before I found her banana pudding recipe.  Now it's up to me to make it.

Stay tuned.

The Cool Spell Continues

I was up earlier than normal today to get ready to go to my BSF group.  When I went out to get the newspaper at 7:30 it was 43 degrees on the back porch here at The Compound.  Needless to say I had on a denim jacket and it felt pretty good walking too and from the newspaper box.

They are calling for low 80's tomorrow and Friday.  Then another cool down.

As they say, in the Ohio Valley, if you don't like the weather, just wait a day and it will change.

That Is A Stretch

It's no secret that I love shoes.  My friends call me the modern day Imelda Marcos.  (You younger faithful readers might need to Google her).  Recently, I have become addicted to Skechers Bobs shoes. All of the ones I have bought have been half off, so that's a good deal for me.

I bought two pairs of them a month ago, and when I put them on, they were tight.  So I did what anyone else would do - got on Amazon and bought some shoe stretchers.  I put them in the shoes and kept them in for 48 hours for each pair.  I put on one of the pair of Bobs today and they fit like I was wearing a worn in house shoe.  I will sure use the shoe stretchers in the future if necessary.

A Great Find

We decided to have one of our favorite supper dishes tonight - burrito casserole.  In thinking of that, I wanted some good guacamole.  I went up the road to the local Mexican grocery store and got a big carton.  it was 16 ounces - and it cost half of what a half-size portion at our favorite Mexican restaurant would cost.  They made it fresh while I waited.  And had me taste a spoon full before they finished it.  It was the best guacamole I have ever tasted.  I will be back there again.  And again.

Yep, Summer Is Over

I got up at about 3:00 this morning to go to the bathroom, and while I was up, I checked the thermostat. It was a bit too cool in the house - especially for the Old Man's comfort.  So I flipped the switch.  It made the house so comfortable, that I slept soundly until 8:30.

I've seen a lot of memes and posts on Facebook today - about how people say they will get another blanket and put on a sweatshirt before they turn on their furnace in October.  It reminded me of something my Sweet Mother used to say.  She said "I'm going to be comfortable in my house regardless of what the calendar says."

Nuff said.

I Think Summer Is Over

When I woke up this morning, it was 43 degrees here at The Compound.  That's a bit chilly, even for me - someone who likes the cold.  I put on a pair of jeans this morning instead of shorts.  This is the first time I've worn jeans since April.  But it is what it is.

Flashback Friday

At times, it's still hard to believe that Grandma died 24 years ago this week.  Not a day goes by that I don't think of her, and at times, I still feel like I should not be back here in what used to be "her room" for fear I'll leave a mess.  She died during her favorite time of the year -- major league baseball playoffs and the World Series.

Grandma was a huge baseball fan, and she loved Reggie Jackson.  So she would root for whichever team Reggie was playing with at the time.  During the playoffs, she would even miss her favorite soap operas to watch the afternoon games. For the evening games, she'd get her bath early in order to be in her chair before the first pitch.

Her son/the Old Man is a lot like her.   He has missed his beloved cowboy shows this week when the playoff games were on.   And in the evenings, he's in his recliner and raring to go while the pregame show is on.  And I've been watching the games right along with him in my recliner.  I think Grandma would be proud.

We're Not Billionaires

I am sorry to report that we are not billionaires today after last night's Powerball drawing.  Nobody won the big jackpot, so we will try again for Saturday's drawing.

On an unrelated note, we are happy here in the Ville to get some rain this afternoon.  It's been a long drought here.  It hasn't been a monsoon - but a good small steady rain for a few hours.

Wednesday, October 4, 2023

Powerball Wednesday

Well, faithful readers, here we are again - just hours away from yet another Powerball drawing for a prize over one billion dollars.  The Old Man and I have our tickets.  And we feel lucky.

Stay tuned.

Monday, October 2, 2023

Powerball Monday

We only had one number out of 10 games for Saturday night's Powerball drawing.  But we are trying it again with the same set of numbers for tonight's drawing.

Stay tuned.

Saturday, September 30, 2023

Powerball Saturday

It's Powerball Saturday - tonight's drawing is worth almost one billion dollars.  Yep, one billion dollars.  I've got my tickets, so all I need to do is wait until they draw my winning numbers.

But no need to worry - if I win, it won't change me one bit.  I promise you.  I still will live in this same house, drive the same Odyessy, and eat and drink the same things.  Only I might do it from a Lear jet.

 Stay tuned.

Slightly Frustrating Friday

I switched things up and did my weekly grocery shopping this morning at Krogers.  It was a pain in the ass, I will say.  They are remodeling the store, and adding a liquor store.  The parking lot is a frightmare.  They have a one-way lane to get in to the store parking lot.  I'm glad I had plenty of time today to get in and out.  But it is what it is.

The really frustrating part was how the store is changing the aisles.  It took me ten minutes to walk through the store to find where the V8 juice had been moved too.  But at least I got in my steps.

Thank You For More Rain

We are thankful today that we got some more rain late last night.  It wasn't a gully washer, but it was rain none the less.

I hope the farmers got more rain than we did.

Wednesday, September 27, 2023

Thank You For The Rain

It wasn't much, but we got a few minutes of much needed rain this morning.  The grass is now almost all brown, which means we haven't had to pay our grass cutter for the past two weeks.  But I digress.  I know the farmers here in Kentucky and all around need rain.  I would be happy for a full day of rain here.

Too Old To Cut, I Mean, Store The Mustard

I read an interesting article about many foods that didn't need to be stored in the refrigerator. Mustard and ketchup were two items listed.  I had no idea.  Now that I thought about it, you always see mustard and ketchup bottles out on the tables in restaurants.  I can't imagine that employees would gather all of them up when the restaurant closes and put them in the refrigerator, and then have to get them out the next morning and put them back out on the tables.

I did a little research, and mustard is made to be immune to bacteria, so that means it should (key word) never spoil.

Memories Monday

I was reminiscing a lot this weekend.  The 23rd was my Sweet Mother's birthday, and also Gram and Grandpa's anniversary.

I especially reminisced about The Gala that we put on back on 9-24-16.  We had all of the family on the Puckett side there, as well as friends who are like family to us.  All in all we had a house full.  It was an awesome day - I don't remember my parents being as happy as they were that day.  This picture taken the morning of The Gala is proof.

Covid 19 Update

At my Saturday trip to Krogers this morning, I noticed less masks than in the previous few weeks.  But as I say every week, that doesn't bother me, because I still mask up to keep the Old Man and me safe.

I did hear about two friends having Covid this week.  And I am still so thankful that the Old Man and I haven't had it.

Free Friday

I am declaring today to be Free Friday.  Here's a list of free things I got today:

1. $5 off of a purchase over $5 at Walgreens

2. Free $15 added to my Kentucky Lottery account. I still play my Pick 4 faithfully and was thrilled to get     $15 in free play.  I spend $7 a week on the Pick 4, so that's two week's worth of free plays.

3. A free dozen eggs at Kroger

Words Of Wisdom

I don't normally single my faithful readers out, but today I need to give a big thank you to one of my original faithful readers who is also one of my oldest friends, SDF.  She quoted my favorite Madea..  I don't have the energy to get into the full story behind her advice, but suffice to say it was spot on.

Thanks again, SDF.  You rock.

That Black Cloud Is Back Again

That black cloud is back again.  In the past few days, I've had two good friends lose parents.  One friend up in Evansville lost his mother, and another friend that was a coworker lost his father.  I truly know how both of them feel.

We still have a lot of friends that are going through cancer treatments right now, and others going through other health issues.

I pray that this dark cloud will lift soon,

Monday, Monday

The weeks have sure been flying by.  It's hard to believe it's Monday already.

It was a good Monday for me and the Old Man.  We had no drama here at The Compound, and enjoyed a restful day reading and watching TV.  And according to the Old Man, I hit a home run tonight when I made a pot of chili using my Grandmother's recipe.  I couldn't ask for a better day.

Sunday, September 17, 2023

Serene Sunday

It was one of the most peaceful, serene Sundays that I've had in a while.  There was no drama, no problems, nothing but peace and quiet and happy times here at The Compound.  You can't ask for much better than that.

Covid 19 Update

A few days ago, I learned that two more friends (a married couple) have Covid.  They both had Covid back in early 2021.  The husband said their symptoms this time hit them harder than the first time they had Covid.  The husband is in a band, so I'm pretty sure the rest of his band will get it, too.

I went to Kroger yesterday and still would estimate about one fourth of the shoppers being masked up.  And I noticed that shoppers that aren't masked are at least cautious because they spent a minute or two wiping down their shopping carts.

Stay safe.

Flashback Friday

Another mega music festival is here in the Ville this weekend - Bourbon and Beyond.  Last night's headliner was Brandi Carlisle.  And later on this weekend the headliner is none other than Blondie.

If I were 25 years younger, I would for sure be there to see Blondie this weekend.  I am thankful for good knees and legs and energy back in the day to attend the great music festivals that I was able to attend.  One that stands out is Farm Aid.  It was here in September 1995.  I went with a good friend from work, and we had an awesome time.  Our seats were great and we enjoyed the crowd and the atmosphere.

Thinking Thursday

I've had a lot on my mind this week - more so than usual.  I've spent a lot of time this week just thinking.  Thinking about things I can change, thinking about things I can't change and moving on.  The moving on part has been the most time consuming for me this week.  But the past few days have been very therapeutic for me.  I thought and prayed about a situation and I was able to let it go last night.  I feel much better today.

Moving on.

The Great Weather Continues

Once again, we have had another beautiful not-hot-at-all day here in the Ville.  It's a bit breezy, but it's sunny and I haven't seen  a cloud all day.  This morning when I went to get the newspaper, I almost wished I had a long sleeve shirt on - it was 56 degrees.  Please note I said "almost."

Tuesday, September 12, 2023

More Cool Weather

The temps today struggled to get above 75, and that is perfectly fine with me.  You know me - I love the cold, and would be happy to get the temps back in the 40's.

Monday, September 11, 2023

Ohio Valley Weather Update

I am very happy to report that we had another week of great cooler weather here in the Ville.  I think today is the first day in a week that the high will be above 80 (forecast of a high of 83).  The cooler weather is supposed to continue - tomorrow morning the weatherazzi is calling for lows of mid-50's.  I am sure looking forward to that!

Saturday, September 9, 2023

Covid 19 Update

At my weekly Saturday trip to Krogers, I would estimate that about a fourth of the shoppers there were masked up as I was.  That has been the norm for the past few weeks.

We heard about one friend this week having Covid.  They were feeling fine - just coughing a bit.  Praying for no more effects from Covid for them.

Flashback Friday

The other day, I needed a little hook to screw in to the newly-repaired garage to hang our finch feeder, so I went to our trusty tool bag.  I was for certain there would be at least one in there.  And I was also for certain where it would be: in an old glass baby food jar.  Sure enough, there were a few in an old jar that was probably as old as me.

My grandpa was notorious for coming up with great ways to organize and keep nails, screws, hooks, etc.  He would keep them in baby food jars.  Being a carpenter, he also came up with a way to organize and keep the many jars.  He built a wooden spool - there were three rows on it, and he nailed the lids to the wood.  To find what you were looking for, you just had to turn the spool to find what you were looking for and then just unscrew the jar from the lid.

I would give anything if we still had that.

Thinking Thursday

For some reason, I've thought about a lot of old family friends today. I thought out loud and talked about them with the Old Man, and we spent a lot of the afternoon reminiscing about them.  It was a great walk down memory lane for the both of us.

Not A Worrisome Wednesday

The new garage roof is on, and we are not worried about the rain in the forecast for today.  We slept in a bit this morning, and have had a relaxing morning with the Old Man and I reading and just puttering around.  I see more of that in the forecast for tomorrow - just because we can.

Tuesday, September 5, 2023

One More Update From The Compound

The roofers finished up the garage this evening and it looks like a new one.  Unfortunately they had to end up replacing pretty much most of the wood on it but it is what it is.  Now if we can just keep our neighbor's limbs from falling on it,

Stay tuned.

Monday, September 4, 2023

Happy Labor Day

TWIT and I would like to wish you, faithful readers, a very happy Labor Day.  I hope none of you had to actually labor very much today, except for fixing meals and snacks.  I know I sure haven't labored.  The most laboring I will do today is take the garbage can out to the curb later tonight.

Sunday, September 3, 2023

Another Update From The Compound

The roofers worked until almost dark last night, but didn't finish; a lot of the actual plywood roof had to be replaced.  But what do you expect for a garage that is 55 years old.  But I digress.  The roofers were here before 7:00 this morning, and they seem to have the same luck as I do - some of the shingles are the wrong color.  So they are cleaning up now and will come back Tuesday morning to finish.

Stay tuned.

Saturday, September 2, 2023

Update From The Compound

The roofers were here before we got up this morning.  When we finally got out of our beds at 8:30, they already had half of the garage roof off.   As I type this, they are still finishing up, and have another half of the roof to get shingled.  Everything tiny bit of scrap and debris has already been picked up, and one of the workers spent an hour out in the yard with a magnetic roller picking up any nails.

All in all, I am happy.

Stay tuned.

A Friday First

The Old Man and I had haircut appointments early this morning, and after we were all beautiful, I took him to breakfast at one of our fave 'hood local restaurants.  He had already walked out to the restaurant porch while I went to pay the check, and it was a first: they gave me a senior citizen discount.  It didn't bother me a bit getting 20% off our our check.

Thursday, August 31, 2023

Ohio Valley Weather Update

I am happy to report that the weather this week here in the 'Ville has been picture perfect.  It's been sunny every day, and the temperatures have been in the upper 70's.  The Old Man and I have been able to enjoy sitting out on the back porch this week - something we haven't done all summer due to the normal August heat and humidity.  I could get used to this.

Tuesday, August 29, 2023

A Great Tuesday

The Old Man and I had a great day today.  My new good friend from my BSF class visited us this morning, bringing her trained therapy dog Waffles and her husband Dan.  They were here for a pretty long while - it gave the Old Man someone new to talk to.  We all four (five, including Waffles) had a great morning talking and just being together.  We are already looking forward to their next visit.  We are so thankful for our friends.

Monday, August 28, 2023

Covid 19 Update

The Old Man and I were up early this morning, waiting for the roofers to come start on the garage repair.  I got a phone call from the company owner saying they would be delayed about a week, since three of his roofers have Covid.  He was headed to Walgreens to get tested, and since then also is positive.  He said they might be able to start Friday or Saturday.

Stay tuned.

Sunday, August 27, 2023

Easy Like Sunday Morning

I'm not ashamed to say that the Old Man and I are still resting up from the action-packed three day visit from my Favorite Cousin and her Dear Husband this past week.  We sure can cram in a whole lot of fun in three days.

We're just chilling now, waiting for the Reds game to start later this afternoon, and anxiously awaiting the roofers to come in the morning for the big garage repair.

We are thankful for the cooler temperatures today, and hope that they continue tomorrow so it won't be too hard on the roofers.

Stay tuned.

Saturday, August 26, 2023

Covid 19 Update

I made an early trip to the grocery this morning, and combined with a trip to the drugstore yesterday, I saw more people masking up than in previous weeks.  I am all for whatever it takes to keep us all safe.

Thursday, August 24, 2023

And Once Again, More Bad News

I knew we couldn't bask in glow of our good luck with the insurance claim too long before something would break.  This time it's the deep freezer out in the garage,  I'm thankful that my Favorite Cousin was here to help me.  Last night, we cleaned out the freezer on the fridge, and brought in essentials from the freezer that hadn't thawed out yet.

But it was a blessing in disguise.  Last night the Old Man and I decided that we don't really need a freezer for just us two.  So it will keep me from overbuying things just because they are on sale.  I go to the grocery store once a week (or twice if we decide we want something special) so I can buy ground beef, chicken, pork, and frozen foods as we need them.  There's really no need for me to have 3 frozen Tombstone pizzas or 6 TV dinners,

It's all good,

Wednesday, August 23, 2023

Finally Some Good News

I got an email this morning from our homeowners insurance company saying that my claim for the water line repair has been approved, and that I should have the money deposited in my checking account tomorrow morning.

For the first time in a long time, we have some good news. But we are not celebrating too much; we are just waiting for the next thing to break down.

Stay tuned.

Tuesday, August 22, 2023

Updates From The Compound

Things are moving along here at The Compound.  The roofers will start Saturday or Monday on the garage, and for that we are thankful.

I filed a claim with our homeowners insurance, and am waiting to hear back to see if it will be covered or not.

The house is cleaned and everything is ready for the visit by my Favorite Cousin and her Sweet Husband.  I have supper planned out for tonight, and tomorrow morning I will make a pot of our favorite taco soup for us for tomorrow night.  We have plenty of adult beverages and snacks so we are good to go.

As always, stay tuned.

Monday, August 21, 2023

Monday, Monday

I spent most of the morning cleaning and getting ready for another visit from my Favorite Cousin and her Awesome Husband.  I got a lot accomplished, and tomorrow I will finish the cleaning job with dusting, sweeping and mopping the kitchen, dining room and family room.  So far, it is all going according to my schedule.

In the meanwhile, we are not looking forward to the weather later this week for my kinfolk's visit - they are calling for 100 degree temps on Thursday and Friday.  I have a feeling we will be spending most of those two days inside.

Stay tuned.

Sunday, August 20, 2023

Ohio Valley Weather Update

I am not looking forward to the weather in the week ahead.  From Wednesday to the weekend, they are calling for temperatures at or above 100.  Yes, 100.  I have already said prayers that our new-ish (5 year old) a/c unit will still stand strong.

Stay tuned.

Saturday, August 19, 2023

Updates From The Compound

After almost two weeks we finally got a roofer to come on Friday to give us a price on fixing the garage roof.  I am going to get a couple more quotes.  And if it works out like I hope it will, I am going to file a home insurance claim on the big water main fix from two months ago.  With the current quote I got for the roof repair, if we can get the claim to go through, after the deductible, it will come out pretty even for us paying out of pocket for the garage roof.  But something tells me this won't work out as smooth as it should, given our streak of bad luck.  But I am hopeful.

As always, stay tuned.

Thankful Thursday

The plumber was here promptly at 8:00 this morning.  And left 45 minutes later, and the check I had to write wasn't painful at all.  For that I am thankful.

Stay tuned.

The Hits Keep Coming

The hits keep coming here at The Compound.  After supper last night, I went to the kitchen to get the coffee ready for the morning, and noticed some water on the floor in front of the sink.  At first I thought I spilled some but of course that wasn't the case.  Yep, a leak under the sink.  On a positive note, half of the kitchen floor got a good mopping and cleaning.

I just called and the plumber will be here at 8:00 in the morning.

It's times like this (and with the garage roof mess) that makes an assisted living place sound pretty darned good.

Stay tuned.

Monday, August 14, 2023

Monday, Monday

It's been a peaceful quiet drama-free Monday so far here at The Compound.  I ran a couple of errands this morning and managed to dodge the rain we had.  Can't ask for much better.

We still have a lot of friends and family that have that black cloud hovering over them.  All I can say with assurance that me and the Old Man will continue our prayers for all of them.

Sunday, August 13, 2023

Restful Sunday

I'm not ashamed to admit that the Old Man and I didn't do much today except take it easy.  We enjoyed watching the church service this morning, and then have enjoyed watching a Reds doubleheader.  The best part was the fact that we were together, and chilling out in our still almost new recliners.  It's all good.

Saturday, August 12, 2023

Covid 19 Update

In the past few times that I've been out and about, I have noticed a few more people wearing masks.  At the Old Man's doctor's office, most of the staff were masked up, and most of the staff at Walgreens was masked up as well.

I've said it before and I will say it again - I could not care less if people look at me weird because I mask up when I go out.

Thursday, August 10, 2023

Thankful Thursday

The Old Man had his six month check-up with his regular doctor this morning.  We were there early and they took him back promptly at 9:00, the time of his appointment.  At 9:30, we were back out in the parking lot heading out.   He got a great report, and he wanted to go to Cracker Barrel so that's where I took him.

We both had great, big breakfasts.  We ate till we were stuffed and then headed back home.  I am thinking tonight will be turkey sandwiches or hot dogs - either which are fine by him.

I'm just thankful for another great check-up for an 89 year old guy.    Thank you, Lord.

Wednesday, Wednesday

Unfortunately I was not the winner of over $1.5 billion last night in the Mega Millions drawing.  Oh well.  There's always the next time.

Tuesday, August 8, 2023

Wish Me Luck

Like a bizillion other people in the US tonight, I've got my Mega Millions tickets for tonight's $1.5 billion drawing.  You can't win if you don't play.   Wish us luck.

Stay tuned.

Monday, Monday

I kept a steady watch on my phone all day in hopes that one of the roofing companies I called would call me back, but I didn't hear from any of them.  I know that our garage isn't the only building in the city that has storm damage this summer.  I'm hoping to hear from at least one of them tomorrrow.

Stay tuned.

Covid 19 Update

I am happy to report that our five friends that had Covid last month are pretty well.  The youngest of the five went on vacation last week, and the other older four are feeling much better.

At the grocery yesterday, I again saw masks.  As I said before, I have no problem if people look at me like I am crazy for wearing my mask.

More Bad Luck At The Compound

I have more bad news to report from The Compound.  Early Thursday morning, we had a brief thunderstorm move through.  Unfortunately, during the storm lightning hit our Neighbor Nick's humongous tree, and an equally humongous branch fell on the front corner of our garage.  Fortunately Neighbor Nick worked all afternoon getting the tree and all cleared away.  Now we are having to get quotes from carpenters and roofers to fix it.

We are going to get quotes from contractors first, and then compare their prices, and then I will contact our homeowners insurance company and find out what our deductible is, and then see which would be the best way to go.  We don't need the entire roof replaced - just the front corner, maybe a four foot square piece, but there will be some carpentry work involved.

So we are in a holding pattern now - waiting for calls back from the many people I called today.   Over all, I am thankful that the damage was just on the corner of our garage instead of on our house.

Stay tuned.

Hello, August

 Dear August:

You have started out much better than your friend July.  Today is only your first day with us, but it was a great, drama-free day, with no big check writing.  I can't ask for much more than that.  I just hope you continue this trend.

Your friend, Carla

Goodbye, July

 Dear July:

I am glad to see you go.  It seems like all I did during your month was write big checks - garage roof repairs, car repairs, bathroom renovation. And lest I forget, we had the week-long seige by the big crazy dog.  I repeat, I am glad to see you go.  I hope August will be a lot less expensive with a lot less drama.

Your friend,  Carla

Covid 19 Update

I was up early this a.m. and did my grocery shopping before it got unbearably hot, and I was surprised to see quite a few shoppers there.  I was also surprised to see more shoppers masked up than previous weeks.

As for our friends with Covid, two of them are out of quarantine and feeling pretty good.  The other three are much older and are having a pretty hard time recovering.  For that reason, I will still mask up until I feel safe again.

Covid 19 Update

I had an errand to run today, and had to make a funeral home visit this afternoon, and I was masked up for both visits.  There were a couple of people masked up when I went to the drugstore, and I was the only person in the funeral home that was masked up, but I didn't care.  It didn't make much difference anyway - I didn't see any of my friend's three sisters, nor their husbands, nor his mother.  I saw his wife, but I have only met her maybe three times in the past 30 years.  But I paid my respects to her and got home.

It was a crazy funeral home visit, but it is what it is.

Happy Life Day

Happy Life Day to me! It's hard to believe that it is my Life Day again - the year has flown by. For those that don't know about it, today is my Life Day - on this day in 1992, I was almost killed in a car wreck. But the Lord had other plans for me. So on this day every year, I celebrate my Life Day.

Today, I have celebrated by me and the Old Man going out to the Far East End to our Triple Crown places - Jeff's Donuts, Paul's Fruit Market, and Kingsley's Meats. We were very thankful that this trip was way way more uneventful than our last trip two years ago when we had trouble with the Silver Bullet.

This afternoon, we are going to watch an early Reds game, and then have a great supper and enjoy just being together. That is what it is all about.

Covid 19 Update

Today, we are up to 5 friends having Covid right now.

I was definitely in the minority (actually, the only one) with people wearing a mask when I went to Walgreens and the fruit and veggie market, but I didn't care.

Covid 19 Update

Today, I heard from two more friends that have just tested positive for Covid.  These two also made it through the previous three and a half years of the virus without catching it until now.

I don't know about you, but I'm going to start masking up again when I go out.

Sunday, Sunday

We've got that dark cloud hanging over our friends again.  Within the past two days, we found out that two of our dear, dear friends from church are both dealing with Covid.  They made it through the past three and a half years of Covid, only to catch it now.  Luckily they are both doing well.  They are both in their early 90's, so this is more serious then if someone younger got Covid.  But we are so thankful they are doing well, and have minimal issues with it, other than having to quarantine from their family.

Black cloud, please go away.

Update From The Compound

The bathroom remodeling crew was here promptly at 8:30 yesterday morning, and they sure 'nuff got the bathroom remodel done in one day like their ads said.  The two young guys did a phenomenal job.  We can't say enough good things about their quality of work.  It has changed the whole look of the bathroom.

I just cannot wait till in the morning to take my first shower in the new shower.

Stay tuned.

Thankful Thursday

I am so thankful that the Silver Bullet aka the Odyssey is back in action and running like a new one.  I picked it up this morning and the Old Man and I can make our trips to the Far East (the east end of town) without worry.

And the bathroom is all cleared out and we are just waiting for the workers to get here at 8:00 in the morning to start the remodel.

Stay tuned.

Wishful Wednesday

Powerball mania is going on today.  Tonight's drawing will be over $1 billion.  I got my tickets yesterday to avoid the rush.  Now to just wait until 10:59 tonight when they draw the numbers.

On my wish list of things to spend my winnings on if I win is mainly taking care of dear friends.  The first check I would write would be for hiring a round-the-clock nurse/caregiver for a dear, dear friend's elderly father so he could get out of his assisted living facility and back into his own home.  While I'm at it, I'd write a check to have his home "senior-ized" - mainly put in ramps on the front and back porch to make it easier on him.  Next, I would buy a new SUV for another dear friend who deserves a new, reliable car.

Stay tuned.

Update From The Compound

After over five years of talking about it and wishing for it, we are finally getting a walk-in shower put in the main bathroom.  I pulled the trigger yesterday afternoon when I signed the contract with the bathroom remodeler.  We're not going for anything fancy - just a white shower insert with a clear glass door, and brushed nickel fixtures.  Now just to wait for them to call and tell us when they will be here to take the old tub and tile out and put the new shower in.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am for the Lord giving the Old Man (and me) safety as we have gotten in and out of the shower.  It will be a huge relief.

Monday, Monday

I was waiting all day with my phone in my hand for a call from the shop about the Silver Bullet.  They called at about 3:30 saying it needs a fuel pump.  They hope to have it ready tomorrow.  I'm just happy to know they found out the problem.  But all in all, I can't complain - the Old Man and my Sweet Mother bought it new in 2001, and these repairs are the first we've had done in all of those years.  It's all good.

Serene Saturday

It was a peaceful, serene Saturday.  There were storms in the forecast, so as soon as we had breakfast I headed out to Kroger and just as I pulled into the carport, it started raining, so my timing was pretty good.

I had a sinus headache most of the afternoon so I was a slug and didn't do much except sit in my recliner, just because I could.

Friday Update

The Odyessy drove fine yesterday so this afternoon I ventured out to our favorite old school fruit and veggie place to get some canteloupes.  I got my melons, only to have the van not start.  I bet I tried 20 times.  I called AAA and they were there within 15 minutes.  And a friend up the road was there even faster to take me back home.  I already had an appointment at the shop for Tuesday morning, and they called me back to say they would hopefully get to it a day earlier.  Anyhoo, I got home safe and have the Ranger to drive in the meanwhile, and have our great friend up the road to come and get me when I need it.  So all in all, it could be a whole lot worse.

Peaceful Thursday

Today was much much more peaceful than the past week here at The Compound.  The most "work" I did today was going to the drugstore to get a prescription for the Old Man and a bottle of saline solution.  It was nice not doing anything today.  Who knows?  I just might not do anything tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

More Drama

The Old Man was feeling good today, so this morning we set out to visit our Triple Crown stores in the East End -- Jeff's Donuts, Paul's Fruit Market, and Kingsley's Meats.  We made it to all three but while I was in at the donut shop, the van shut down.  After about 5 attempts to start it, it finally fired up.  We both prayed for a trip home, and headed out.  But after abou two miles it shut down again.  But luckily after again 5 attempts it started back up.  We were debating whether to call AAA and someone to come get us home, but we both decided to head on.  Thank the Lord we made it back home to The Compound.

As soon as I got the Old Man back into the house, I went back up to the dealer that did the work on the van two weeks ago.  I waited awhile and they said someone "adjusted" something, and it was just fine.  The first they could give it a thorough inspection is Tuesday.  I stopped at Krogers on the way home for a few provisions and made it home just fine.

So this hasn't been a real good week for me here.  But it could be a whole lot worse.  I have so many dear friends going through much, much worse things than a car that quits.

Siege At The Compound Is Over

After six long days, and a total of ten visits by Animal Control, and also two full days of an animal rescue group being here, the Siege At The Compounded ended yesterday morning.

I was up at 5:20 thanks to the crazy dog barking.  At about 9:00 an Animal Control officer was here and he put fresh food in the big trap they put under the gazebo and set the trap.  Ten minutes after he left, The Old Man was looking out to see if he could see the crazy dog, and thank the Lord it was in the trap.  I called Animal Control and within five minutes, the officer was back along with another officer for backup.  It only took them about five minutes to get the trap moved to their truck and get the dog out of the trap and into their truck.  When they pulled out of the driveway, you cannot imagine the relief that me, The Old Man and our next door neighbors felt.

We are just glad this is over.

Still Under Siege At The Compound

Today is day 5 of Siege At The Compound.   The dog has gotten more aggressive.  Yesterday afternoon, she charged at me again as I opened up the back porch door to reach over and throw a bag of trash into the garbage can.  Animal Control was here again yesterday morning and again last night, both to no avail.  And the dog rescue people were here yesterday morning and again last night, also to no avail.

As I type this, Animal Control and two of the rescue people are here again.  All they did was put fresh food in the two traps set up.  They all agreed that the dog is probably starving and they hope (key word) for her to into one of the traps to get some food.

As always, stay tuned.

Still Under Siege At The Compound

Since I last posted yesterday, Louisville Animal Control has been out three times, and some people from a local rescue group have been out here three times, only to not catch the elusive very aggressive big dog.

As I type this, there is a big trap under the gazebo, and another trip out between the little barn and the chicken coop - both of which the dog has evaded for the last 24 hours.  She ran off toward the Riverport area behind our house, and as of 5 minutes ago, there were 3 adults and 2 kids running around trying to catch her.

All I know is this is the fourth day I have been truly afraid to come out of my house because the dog charges at me. Luckily this morning when she ran off, I was able to get to the garage and run to Kroger for a few things we wanted and then are hunkered back down in the house. Something has got to give.  Animal Control said they'd have two officers back later this afternoon but a lot good that will do.

Something has got to give - one way or another.   Stay tuned.

Still Under Siege At The Compound

For three days in a row, the Louisville Metro Animal Services were unable to catch the dog.  This morning, it was sleeping under the gazebo and I thought I could make a break for it to go to Walgreens to pick up my eczema meds, but as soon as I opened the porch door, it charged up the ramp at me.  I was lucky to close the door in time.  A few minutes later, LMAS came, and neither one of the officers could catch it.  They put a trap under the gazebo.  The dog ran off, so it was all clear for me to go get my meds and a few groceries we needed. Ten minutes after I got back home, the dog was back.  She went under the gazebo, and attempted to get the food that was in the trap.  But she tripped the trap before she could get in there and it spooked her.  She's now back under my truck in the carport.

I am not going to be held hostage in my own home.  I am going to call LMAS every hour until they can get someone competent enough to catch the damned dog.

Stay tuned.

Under Siege At The Compound

Since yesterday morning, we have been under siege at The Compound.  A huge Mastiff dog was first under my Ranger in the carport all day yesterday.  I called Animal Control early and they finally came out at 10:00 last night.  Of course they couldn't catch the dog.  It was back early this morning - I had about 87 pictures from our security cameras of the dog walking up and down the back porch ramp.  I called Animal Control again early this morning, and the [in name only] dog catcher came just as we were finishing supper.  She was almost as worthless as the once they sent last night.  She basically said to call if the dog gets more aggressive, and try to catch her in the garage.  I'm sorry - I'm not doing that.  When I went out to get the van out this morning to go get the Old Man's prescription, the dog was barking and growling at me like crazy.  Anytime it sees me out on the back porch ramp it starts growling and barking.

We were hopeful for about fifteen minutes when the dog ran across the road and down toward the river.  But it's back again, holding court in the gazebo - laying down like it owns it.

I'm done with Animal Control.  Tomorrow I'm calling them back and telling them to send two people to catch the dog or I'm going to shoot it and then they can send the clean-up people out to pick it up.

Stay tuned.

Happy Fourth Of July

TWIT and I would like to wish you, faithful readers, a very happy Fourth of July.  I hope everyone eats some good hot dogs or hamburgers today.  And I also hope that your neighbors will stop shooting off fireworks by the time you go to bed tonight.

Stormy Sunday

Once again, we've had big storms on a Sunday.  But it seems like we've had big storms every day for the past two weeks.  As I was clearing the supper table, you couldn't see the house across the street because it was raining so hard.  Luckily all of our roofs and everything else is ok from the heavy winds.

Praying for bettah dayz tomorrow.

Stormy Saturday

Once again, we had pretty heavy storms and a ton of rain again today.  Even with the storms the air quality alert is still in effect from the fires in Canada.  Once again this today, you couldn't see the Indiana hills until late afternoon.  But I am over the daily thunderstorms.  The past three days, the thunder has been so loud and lasted a long time.  But all we can do is hunker down till it passes.

Let Us Breathe

For the past two weeks, we've had haze and smoke here in the Ville from the Canadian wildfires.  Even after storms and rains, the haze and smoke has still lingered.  I've talked to a few friends in the past few days that had had a hard time with the haze and had to use their Primatene or Albuterol inhalers.  On the nightly news, they said that doctors and hospitals are reporting more patients coming in with breathing issues.  Thank the Lord I hadn't had that problem but you could sure tell the air was "close" as my Gram would say.  I sure hope that this haze and smoke clears up so everyone can breathe again easier.

Thankful Thursday

On Tuesday morning, I put the Silver Bullet aka the Odyessy into the shop for some major repairs.  A friend up the road took me to the shop this morning while we dodged another storm and I picked it up.  I will do whatever it takes to keep the Silver Bullet road-worthy since it is easy for the Old Man (and me) to get in and out of.  I was thankful for the money to pay for it.  And I was more thankful to my former employer for their mega generous contributions to my retirement fund to pay for it.

Wheezy Wednesday

I heard from five different friends today that all said they had some breathing issues with the haze and smoke from the Canadian wildfires.  It was a "red alert" day here in the Ville, warning people to stay indoors.  I was out for about five minutes today getting gas in the Ranger, and had no problems, but you could definitely tell the haze and smoke was out there, making the air "close" as my Gram would say.

Hoping for better weather tomorrow.

Storm Update

We had one hell of a storm move through the area last night.  With the wind the way it was, I am not ashamed to say for the first time ever I was afraid.  I knew the Old Man couldn't safely get down to the basement, so we moved to the kitchen table away from windows.

We made it through safely, but not without some drama.  The wind was so strong that it blew open the door to the chicken coop - tearing off the latch along with the caribiner D-clip that keeps it locked.  After the wind stopped, we saw our neighbor Meghan knocking on the back porch door - she wanted us to know that Large Marge was out of the coop.  I went out there, wading through a lot of standing water, and managed to catch her and put her back in the coop.  Meghan's husband Josh put the latch back on the door and all was well.

It was beautiful all day long today, albeit a bit windy.  But a lot better than last night.
