Farewell, 2020

Goodbye, 2020.  I know I am not alone in saying we are glad to see you go.  Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

More Christmas Hangover

I guess I really had a big Christmas hangover here at The Compound.

There's been some stuff going on here and at work, and I was just too tired to post yesterday.  I apologize, and in the new year, I am going to do better with posting every day.

Christmas Hangover

I was having my morning coffee watching my favorite morning local news program, and the weatherazzi made a comment that made perfect sense to the two newscasters and to me.  He said that he had a "Christmas hangover" this morning.  Yep, I, too, had a Christmas hangover.  I had four days of doing absolutely nothing and then was back in the office trying to work and focus.  Yep, a Christmas hangover.

Civud19 Update 12-27-20

I was stopped at the light at the big intersection on our road this morning, and saw something that really made an impact on me.  I was on Greenwood heading up, and there going through the intersection was a police car with his flashing lights on being an escort, and behind him was a semi.  But this wasn't just any semi; I noticed the name of the trucking company was something-or-other pharmaceutical transport, and in big letters under the name was something to the effect of "climate controlled".  With a police escort, I believe it was a semi hauling some more doses of the virus vaccine.  I said a quick prayer for safe travels for the driver and for the contents he was hauling.

Lost And Not Found

For the past two days, I've been going crazy trying (key word) to find a small recipe book that Grandma gave me way, way back in the day.  It was a blank book, with pages for you to write in recipes.  Grandma wrote in a few recipes to get me started, and that makes it even more special.

I've looked in three boxes where we keep cookbooks, and it's not there.  I've looked in the closets, pantry and living, and it's not there.  And this morning I spent a couple of hours cleaning out the bookcase in the family room, and it's not there either.

I'm not giving up, though.  Stay tuned.

Merry Christmas

TWIT and I would like to wish you, faithful readers, a very Merry Christmas.

Winter Oddity

I went to the grocery this morning, and the temperature was in the upper 20's with some wind, so when I say it was cold, you know it was cold.  I saw 3 big strapping men wearing shorts.  They were bundled up with heavy sweatshirts, and one even had on a down jacket, but yet he was still wearing shorts.  Beats the hell out of me.

Happy Christmas Eve Eve

I'm off from work until Monday - and that's one of the best Christmas presents I could get.  Nuff said.

Team Bud Update

 Team Bud Update:

Last week, The Old Man had his annual scan on his aneurysm, and today we visited his vascular surgeon for the results. We had faith that it would be fine, but we couldn't help but to be a bit nerved up. The surgeon came in, and after giving both of us elbow bumps, he said that the scan looked great and that the aneurysm had actually shrunk!!! He said they don't see that too often. And he reminded us that he was only the second person at Norton's that survived an aneurysm that big. He told him that he looked great, and to keep on doing what he's doing.
We thank the Lord for answered prayers, and for keeping His hand on my father. And we also thank you all for your prayers. This turning out to be an awesome Christmas after all!!

Final Farewell, Old Friend

Yesterday was bittersweet. I just said goodbye to a trusted old friend - my Blazer. In January, I would have had it for 25 years. During the almost 25 years, not once did it break down while I was driving.

It went through a lot but was like the Energizer Bunny: it was in the midst of a tornado and a huge tree fell on it, but it was fixed like new. A woman didn’t yield and crashed into it less than a half mile from home , but it was fixed like new. And a kid crashed into our parking lot at work and it was totaled, but once again it was rebuilt like new.
Time took its toll and it needed a new head gasket, so it was time to let it go. The wife of the guy that bought it was ecstatic this morning when they came to pick it up, and said she wants her husband to start fixing it up right away.
Like I said - it is bittersweet. I think I only know a couple of people that have had a car that long. If the new owner has a tenth of the good luck I had with it, she will be doing good.

Farewell, Old Friend

The time has come for me to say goodbye to an old, trusted friend:  the Blazer.  It needs a new head gasket, and it's worth the money nor the effort to get it fixed.  The last time I drove it was back in the spring, and I couldn't go a mile without it overheating.  And being the procrastinator that I am, I just didn't do anything about it.  But a few weeks ago, The Old Man "strongly urged" me to get rid of it.  I checked around, but couldn't find anyone interested.  Flash forward to Monday.  A neighbor's great-grandson called and said he's interested in it.  Believe me when I tell you, if The Old Man could have physically done a cartwheel, he would have.

I explained about the overheating issue, and the fact that it has a new transmission with less than 300 miles on it, and that it hadn't been started since the spring, and he was still interested.  As I type this, I have the battery charger on it, praying that it will start.  I will try to start it in about an hour, and start or nor start, I'll the guy and tell him and see if he still wants it.

Stay tuned.

Another Christmas Carol Question

Just exactly are the "scary ghost stories" that are associated with Christmas?

What A Compliment

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the pizza parlor up the road for carryout for supper, and the girl that waited on me gave me one of the biggest compliments I ever had.  She gave me the receipt and I added the tip, and she said "Wow - you are the fasted adder I've ever waited on.  You figured the tip in no time."

I could have said "Thanks" but I had to explain to her that even though I added the tip very fast, I was one of the worst ever when it comes to anything math-related.

But I still enjoyed the compliment.

Twas The Second Tuesday Before Christmas . . .

. . . and all through The Compound the Old Man had me working.  After fixing him his requested SOS for breakfast, I dusted, vacuumed, and mopped floors.  And helped him make a carrot cake.  And also got the back bedroom cleaned up.  Now I'm ready for a long winter's nap.

Monday, December 14, 2020

Monday, Monday

I was off today, and even though I was awake at 5:30, it was still better than a day in the office.

Today was the day for the Old Man's annual aneurysm scan.  We got there early and got a great parking spot, and he didn't have a lot of walking to do, thank goodness.  And even though we had to wait 45 minutes after his scheduled appointment, once they took him back, the scan only took about 15 minutes.

We go next Monday afternoon to see the vascular surgeon for the results of the scan.  I'm not anticipating any surprises, but we would appreciate the prayers just the same.

Another Christmas Carol Question

Just how do you put "presents on the tree"?

Christmas Carol Question

Does anyone still roast chestnuts on a open fire?

I'm thinking not.

Happy Day

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that I am out of the office next week.  So I'm just going to leave it at that.

Thursday, December 10, 2020

So Happy It's Thursday

It is a SHIT day -- So Happy It's Thursday.

It's Distribution Day Eve, AND best of all, it's VACATION WEEK EVE!  Yep - I'm off from work next week.  Need I say more?

Wednesday, December 9, 2020

Haircut Wednesday

The Old Man and I got haircuts tonight, and we look and feel much, much better.

Tuesday, December 8, 2020

Updates From The Compound

I apologize, faithful readers.  I was busy yesterday after work doing chores and forgot to post.

It's been cold here the past few days, and cloudy.  But tomorrow we're supposed to see the sun and it's supposed to get to the mid 50's - just in time for the Old Man and I to head out to get haircuts.  Which are long overdue, I have to say.

Sunday, December 6, 2020

Sunday Fun Day, Sorta

The Old Man and I had a good Sunday.  It was laundry day, and I'm not ashamed to say I would rather be whacked in the head than do laundry, but it's not going to do itself.

Saturday, December 5, 2020

Happy Saturday

I am happy to report that the Old Man's cousin and his wife from Down In The Country came by today to visit and bring us two quarts of Amish made molasses and some venison from the deer they got just a few weeks ago.  You can't ask for much more family love than that. At first, they said they would drop it off on the porch, but the Old Man and I want to actually be with family, that we said it was OK for them to come into the house.

We all were six feet apart while we visited, and it was such an awesome time.  We got to talk to someone else besides each other.  I know you all can relate to that.

Crazy Friday

It was a crazy day at The Compound and at work today.  My coworkers and I were sure glad when 4:30 rolled around so we could get the hell out of the office.

Hoping that this weekend is better than today was.

Ohio Valley Weather Update Again

I'm not ashamed to say I got out one of my toboggans this morning and wore it on the way to work.  My hair wasn't really a concern - I just wanted to stay warm.  And it sure helped. I know this is odd coming from the person that is always hot, but in my advanced years, I feel the cold more.

Tuesday, December 1, 2020

Ohio Valley Weather Update

We got maybe a fourth of an inch of snow last night at The Compound, but it sure as hell (oxymoron) was cold this morning when I went to work.  I wish I'd had on one of my cool stocking caps.  You can best believe I will have one on tomorrow.

Monday, November 30, 2020

Happy First Snow Of Winter 2020

I am very happy to report that we got our first snow of winter 2020 today.  As I type this, it is far from what we would classify a dusting, but just before I came in to the computer room, I looked out into the side yard and you could truly tell it was a small dusting.

Updates From The Compound

I took it easy yesterday, and other than a quick trip to Kroger for some egg nog and to pick up some hot wings for supper, I didn't do much.  And it was nice and relaxing.

Our neighbor Nicky Boy sure didn't relax much yesterday - he got up the rest of our leaves, and cleared leaves and twigs out from underneath the back porch ramp and from against the house.  We are so thankful to have him as a neighbor - not just during this Thanksgiving season but every day.

Today, I am cooking again.  We weren't pleased with the seasonings used on the boneless turkey breast we had on Thursday, so on Friday I went out and got a for-real turkey breast and have it thawed and ready to go in the oven shortly to accompany our Thanksgiving dinner leftovers.

Stay tuned for a review.  Hopefully I won't burn it.

Friday, November 27, 2020

Happy Black Friday

My Black Friday shopping consisted of a trip to Krogers today, so I won't have to go tomorrow.  The store was fairly empty, so I was in and out quickly.

I spent the rest of Black Friday on the couch - just like I'd planned.

Thursday, November 26, 2020

Happy Thanksgiving

TWIT and I would like to wish you, faithful readers, a very happy Thanksgiving Day.  I am thankful that you all still read my blog after all of these years.

This year, I am very proud to say that the Old Man and I made our Thanksgiving dinner.  For the past 5 years, we've gotten the "hot and ready" big meal from Cracker Barrel.  But this year, we decided we would cook it our selves.   Other than us not being real happy with the Butterball boneless turkey breast-in-a-bag that goes from the freezer to the oven, our meal was a home run.  The Old Man made great cornbread dressing, and I made dumplings and green bean casserole.  And Patti LaBelle made our dessert - sweet potato pie.

With this year of craziness, the Old Man and I are still very thankful that we're together, and that the Lord has seen us through another year since losing my Sweet Mother.

Wednesday, November 25, 2020

Happy Thanksgiving Eve

Back in the day, Thanksgiving Eve was a big night to go out clubbing/partying.  Not so this year.  The Old Man and I are partying here at The Compound.  We will be enjoying some adult beverages, and will be geared up and ready to fix our Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow.

Covid19 Update 11-24-20

We received word today that yet another of our church members has tested positive, and is in pretty bad shape.  Unfortunately, they were at church this past Sunday, and received word on Monday that they had tested positive.  The health department has contacted the church members that that person had been in contact with on Sunday, and they were asked to quarantine for 14 days.

Yet one more reason the Old Man and I watch the church service at home.

Our prayers are with our church member, and others that may been infected.

Carnage Update

On the way to and from work today, we now have a total of 7 deer on the side of the Greenbelt.  I'm just glad that they didn't run into me.

Sunday, November 22, 2020

Covid19 Update 11-22-20

Things have changed since my trip to the grocery store yesterday.

Today, the ramen noodles, napkins, paper plates and Jello shelves were pretty bare.  Luckily I didn't need any of those items, but I am just reporting as I made a quick trip in and out at Meijers.

Covid19 Update 11-21-20

I was expecting Krogers to be cray today with the new restrictions and with it being the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but I was in and out in less than my usual Saturday shopping time.  It was pretty much the same amount of items on my list.

And I got 60 cents off a gallon of gas, too!  I'm a winner today!.

It Was Not A Good Friday

For the second time this week, we did not get a newspaper.  As soon as their customer service lines were open at 8:00, I called and expressed myself.  I told them to credit us for the three newspapers we didn't receive in the past two weeks, and told them when it happened again (not "if") I would be calling back to cancel our subscription.

And a package I'd been waiting on for a week was sent back to the order point.  I'd ordered a Bulleit bourbon gift pack for the Old Man, only to find out that one of the bottles had broken, so they sent the package back.  I was reassured today they would do all they could do to get a new shipment to me as soon as possible.

At this point, I'm not holding my breath on either one of these folks.

Stay tuned.

Carnage Report Update

Yesterday going to and from work, I saw a total of 6 deer that been hit and were on the side of the Greenbelt.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Wednesday, November 18, 2020

Carnage Report

On the way home from work today, I counted four deer on the side of the Greenbelt that had been hit.  That might be a record for one day.  Stay tuned.

Holiday Update

I just got back from a quick trip to Tractor Supply for chicken feed, and during the trip I stopped counting at 25 houses decorated for Christmas.  Ordinarily, I would bag on them.  But this has been such a shitty year, if anyone wants to put Christmas decorations up or put their tree up, good on ya.

I Sure Miss You, Mama

I've been dreading this day for months. One year ago today is when my sweet mother left her earthly home and went to her heavenly home with our Lord.

I've had a lot of friends give me their advice on how to deal with today. Some of it helped; some of it, not so much. But I have to say that thanks to the Lord and the prayers from my friends and family, it wasn't as hard on me and the Old Man as we thought it would. As always, the Lord is in control, and as always, He has been working in the background ahead of today, and He allowed a couple of things to happen today to distract me from times that I would be feeling weepy. I'll share one of those things, as insequential as it may be.
Before work this morning, I took the garbage bag out of the can in the kitchen, only to find that something had leaked out and made a huge mess in the can. So I did what my sweet Mother would do - took the can to the bathtub and washed it out. Only I wasn't singing a song or smiling like I'd seen her do so many times. But that's something for me to strive for.
For those that knew my sweet Mother or had met her, I'd like to ask you to take a minute and post the one thing that you remember most about my Sweet Mother. Your memories will help me and the Old Man make this day a tribute to her.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

Once again, we had a high wind warning today.  And boy, the weatherazzi was right.  Luckily we didn't have any trees or wires down in our area, but I read where some friends across the big water in southern Indiana have been without power since about 9:00 this morning.

We were hoping the wind would blow all of our leaves into someone else's yard, but unfortunately that didn't happen.

Covid19 Update 11-14-20

I went to Meijer this morning to get the few things I wanted, and I had called before I left the house to ask the meat department if they had jowl bacon, and they said yes.  Well, after I got there, I found out they didn't.  And they didn't have a few other items I wanted to I was pissed off and left and went to my Krogers, where I got everything I wanted, including the only pack of jowl bacon they had in the store.

I talked to the manager about how it was crazy as it is on a snow night, and he said that people are panicking thinking we're going to have another state-wide shutdown so they're stocking up.

I don't need to tell you that we are very well stocked up here at The Compound - even after last Saturday's pantry purge and this morning's freezer purge.

Friday, November 13, 2020

Covid19 Update 11-13-20

On my way to work this morning, the old drugstore-turned-testing-center was up and running.  The cars were wrapped around the building twice waiting to get tested for Covid.

All I can do is keep on being as vigilant as I have been - wearing my mask when I go to the store, and only going to the store when necessary, and not going anywhere else.  We decided today that we are going to cut out our carry-out for awhile, just in case.  Of course this means more cooking for me, but I'm ready for it.

Covid19 Update 11-12-20

We lost another friend from church yesterday to the Covid19.  Dot was a sweet, spunky lady, and had no other underlying health issues.

Dot had a very good sense of humor and was very witty.  About a month before the pandemic hit and we were still having regular church, I talked to her as we walked into the sanctuary.  She told me that they had 100% in Sunday School that morning.  I told her that was great.  She told me "Well, not really.  We had 100% of everyone in Sunday School this morning using a walker or cane."

Rest in peace, Dot.  You will be missed.

Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Happy Veterans Day

TWIT and I would like to wish a very happy Veterans Day to all of the veterans out there, especially to my favorite veteran, the Old Man.

He and I have spent the evening watching the "MASH" show finale, and as we've watched, I've asked him questions about his service during the Korean War.

Thank you all for your service.

Monday, November 9, 2020

Monday, Monday

It was a very long Monday today at work, but at least I didn't have many problems to deal with.  But it still was a long work day. That's about all I got today.

Sunday, November 8, 2020

Update From The Compound

This morning, we went through another small closet/pantry in the hallway and cleared it out. We got rid of quite a few bags of potato chips.  It wasn't quite as big of a task as yesterday's purge, but we got it done.

Now to get back to the office tomorrow so I can get some rest.

Saturday, November 7, 2020

Update From The Compound

At the same time, I am happy and also ashamed to report this.  Today, the Old Man and I went through the pantry, and threw out everything that had expired.  Then we took the rest of the good stuff out and rearranged and organized.  It was a job, but we did it.  And as for the ashamed part, I am sorry when I saw the amount of foods that had expired and we threw out.  But I am not looking back - just looking forward.

The old bad stuff will be taken out with the garbage on Wednesday night, and we are starting over.

Civud19 Update 11-6-20

As of this evening, I have two new 'Rona cases to report.  Both of the people felt like crap, and one of them said that he felt like his lungs had concrete in them.  But they are both on the mend, and their families are waiting their Covid19 test results.

Prayers are going up for both of these families.

Full Moon Carry Over

I know the full moon was on Saturday, but I swear it has carried over to this week.  Things have been unusually crazy at work every day this week.  I'm ready for some form of non-crazy.  Note that I did not use the word "normal"; as I always say, "normal" is just a setting on the washing machine.

Tuesday, November 3, 2020

Election Day

It's Election Day, and I'm not ashamed to say that it's only 8:30 but I'd be happy to go to bed right now.

It was a crazy crazy day at work - a day that is almost too crazy to talk about.

First of all, about a block from the company, a semi exploded.

And then later on, a crazy woman tried to get in to the company at the Receiving Dock.  She was holding an ax.

Add to this the fact that it is Election Day.  You can't make this shit up.  I'm just happy I'm at the compound and will soon be on the couch safe and warm, regardless of who wins.

Monday, November 2, 2020

Way To Go, Air Fryer

I tried something new in our air fryer tonight for supper, and it was a big hit.  I fixed center cut bone-in pork chops.  And they were darned near perfect.  They were very tender and juicy - just how you'd expect.

I'm not nearly as afraid of the air fryer as I was a year ago.

Happy November 1

We made it to November, faithful readers.  In and of itself, that is a huge accomplishment for us in 2020.

Saturday, October 31, 2020

Happy Halloween

TWIT and I hope you, faithful readers, had a happy Halloween.  Things were very different this year, but it was still Halloween nonetheless.

We've had a peaceful, relaxing evening here at The Compound eating Three Musketeers.  Nuff said.

Covid19 Update 10-30-20

We got word this morning that a dear friend from church died today from the 'Rona.  There were no underlying issues.

Felix was an awesome guy.  He was blind, but oh how his memory was.  He always called me "Miss Mozart"  because my birthday was the same birthday as Mozart.

He had so much talent - he played the piano beautifully.  And he could quote scripture word for word.

We will miss you, Felix.  But while we had the chance to walk with you, our lives are so much richer because of you.

We will see you up in Glory.

Covid19 Update 10-29-20

As I type this post, a dear friend's son and his girlfriend are waiting for Covid19 test results.  The girlfriend's mother went to Florida a couple of weeks ago and when she got back to Louisville, became sick and got the 'Rona.

It seems to be spreading more now than in the spring.  All we can do is pray for bettah dayz.

Wednesday, October 28, 2020

Covid19 Update 10-28-20

I got word today that another friend had tested positive for the 'Rona.  And they were feeling pretty sick, but fortunately able to quarantine at home away from people.

This is getting much, much worse instead of better, faithful readers.

Tuesday, October 27, 2020

Tuesday Updates

There's a lot going on around me and the Old Man right now - a lot of dear friends are hurting, in need of healing and strength, and we just finished with Tuesday Night Prayer Meeting.  It is a privilege to pray for our friends.

The Old Man and I had an epiphany a few weeks ago.  He and I have become the people that he and I would ask for prayers.  It seems that more and more friends and family have been asking us to pray for them, and we are sure doing it.

If any of you, faithful readers, have a prayer request, just leave me a comment and will have you covered.

Covid19 Update 10-26-20

TWIT and I stand with our Governor with his recommendations he announced today.

As I said before, I will wear a mask till I take my last breath if it will help my Sweet Father from not catching the virus.  And as of now, we don't really miss going out to restaurants all that much.

I know that the majority of my friends don't feel the same way as me, and that's OK.  I just ask that they don't bag on me for doing what I need to do to keep my Sweet Father safe.

Covid19 UPdate 10-25-20

The shortages have happened again at the grocery store.  For the past three weeks, the shelves that normally have canned chili have been almost bare.  I can't get our favorite Castleberry Chili Hot Dog Sauce.  I am down to one can in the pantry.  Times are tough.

Saturday, October 24, 2020

Covid19 Update 10-24-20

It's Saturday, and a lot of churches and other organizations are having trunk-or-treat events tonight.  I just cringe when I think about it.  I hope that everyone that attends these tonight are masked up.

Friday, October 23, 2020

Covid19 Update 10-23-20

I talked to my friend today, and he said that he and his wife were feeling better, thank the Lord for prayers answered.

He said that they still feel a bit weak and are hoping they get their strength back soon.

And for the record, he and his wife and kids have been staunch mask wearers since March.

Wednesday, October 21, 2020

Covid19 Update 10-21-20

I'm sorry to report that a friend and his wife have both tested positive for the 'Rona.  They've been quarantined at home since last Monday.  When I last checked on them this morning, they were both still feeling pretty bad.  But they've seen some improvements every day.

Our prayers are with them for a complete recovery, and for their kids not to catch it.

Tuesday, October 20, 2020

Good Luck, Dodgers

TWIT and I would like to wish the Los Angeles Dodgers good luck in the World Series.  We are especially rooting for Mookie Betts.  He's the cousin of a coworker, and we've been rooting for him ever season since I found out that piece of news.

It's ironic that I'm rooting for the Dodgers, given the fact that they were my Cincinnati Reds rival back in the day.

File Under: WTF?

It's Monday and we have Thursday Night Football on TV.  I'm not going to try to figure it out.

Sunday, October 18, 2020

Way To Go, Tennessee Titans

TWIT and I would like to say way to go to my favorite NFL team, the Tennessee Titans on winning today and being 5 and 0 so far this season.   Keep up the good work, boys.

The Black Cloud Is Back Again

We got word that a dear, old family friend was back in the hospital down at Vanderbilt today.  She's had a rough time over the past few years with her fight with breast cancer.  We thought things were ok for the past couple of weeks, but we found out yesterday she was back down in Vandy.  That's the best hospital for her, and our prayers have been going up most of the day.

We sure wish this Black Cloud would lift and go away.

Thursday, October 15, 2020

The Black Cloud Is Moving Away

I am very happy to report that the Black Cloud is moving away. My coworker got news today that his mother is doing much better than they thought a few days ago.  The small-town hospital had overreacted a bit.  She is now in the big hospital in Omaha, and got a good report, and should be going back home tomorrow or Saturday with orders to walk at least the equivalent of four blocks a day in order to keep fluid from building up and most importantly to get her strength and endurance back.

We send up prayers of thanks to the Great Physician for watching over Mrs. S and taking good care of her.

That Black Cloud Is Still Around Us

That damned black cloud sure won't leave.  I got word yesterday that an old coworker's father died on Monday, and found out today that one of my favorite sales reps from work from way back in the day died.

That black cloud sure needs to get out of here.  This has been more than enough bad news for the past few weeks.

Post Re-Entry

It was another busy day today at work, and it could be getting busier.  A coworker might be out for a week or more as he goes back to his hometown to be with his mother who is not doing well.  I talked to him today and told him to not give the company another single thought, and to only do what he feels he needs to do for his mother and family.  Needless to say, they are at the top of the Compound's prayer list.  And I ask you for prayers for them as well.

Re-Entry

Re-entry started out bad, but took a thankful turn for the better.

I went in early today, and was hit by a lot of surprises, but by 2:00 break I was all caught up from last week, and caught up with the daily stuff, so I didn't work over.  It was crazy for the first few hours of the day - I'm not going to lie.  Everyone I talked to was worried about the 3 coworkers who tested positive for the 'Rona late last week.  I was thankful that I wasn't in the office last week so I wasn't exposed to any of those three, thank the Lord.

Happy Vacation Week - The Last Day

It's back to work tomorrow, and I am not ashamed to say I am already dreading Re-Entry.  We will be crazy busy for a while with us being one person short in the department, and then with getting the new replacement trained, so we will be coming in early and/or working over.  But the OT will come in handy.

For the rest of the day, the only thing I "have" to do is switch over a load of laundry to the dryer in about a half hour, and then fold said laundry, and put it away.  Other than that, I'm going to enjoy my last hours of being able to sit on the couch.

Happy Vacation Week - Day 6

Yesterday didn't go quite as well as we would have liked, but it is what it is.

I took the Silver Bullet aka the Odyessy up to the dealer for an oil change and check-up.  We were expecting bad news after they said six months ago it would need a new oil pump and fuel pump.  So the time has come to pull the trigger and get it fixed.  Other than replacing the battery and getting Freon put in last summer, we haven't had to have any work done on it.  And the 'Rents bought it in 2002.  I'd say that's a damned good record.

On Monday, I will call a couple of local, very reputable repair shops close to home and hopefully will get a better price than what the dealer would charge.

But I'm not letting this ruin my weekend.  Like I said, we were expecting it already, so it wasn't a major shock.  I'm going to enjoy my Saturday and Sunday and prepare for re-entry on Monday.

Happy Vacation Week - Day 5

Today is my last official vacation day this week, but luckily I still have Saturday and Sunday to get ready for Monday morning re-entry.

Yesterday was another great, relaxing day.  I bought a pair of generic Air Pods and for the low price of $10.99, they sound and feel awesome.  I also got a small set of bluetooth speakers so we can have better sound when we watch our church services on Facebook.

We tried a new soul food restaurant for carry-out last night and it was awesome.  The Old Man said his pork chop was the best he's ever had.  I had wings with Grippos seasoning on them, and I did everything except suck the marrow out of the bones.  We will definitely be back.  Soon.

As for today's activities, it's time to take the Silver Bullet aka the Odyessy to get an oil change, and we will also be making a trip up Walgreens to get the Old Man's flu shot.  Other than that, it will once again be a day to relax and do nothing else.

Happy Vacation Week - Day 4

I am happy to report that I made it to the Bristol yesterday afternoon and got our carryout dinner with Green Chili Wontons and Artichoke Fritters.  With the insulated bag I used. when I got home I didn't have to heat the food up.  Score.

The Old Man and I spent about an hour out in the back field yesterday doing some chopping, weed eating and clearing.  Even though I was working, it was a great time.  At least I wasn't in an office working for the man.

Today, we have no outdoor work to do.  I am going to spend the rest of the day reading, praying, and doing nothing.

Happy Vacation Week - Day 3

I really didn't do any of the things I'd hoped to do yesterday, but that's perfectly fine. It was still a great day off.

Yesterday morning, I got the Old Man out of the house and we went for a drive across the Big Water aka the Ohio River into southern Indiana and we drove over to look at the new Caesar's casino.  It opened a in December just before the pandemic broke out.  And a month ago, they moved the big casino boat down the river to it's new home in Alabama.  But I digress.  We were a bit disappointed because from the road you couldn't see the new land-based casino.  But we had a great drive on a beautiful fall day, and we both saw something very interesting that we'd never seen before.  On the outskirts of New Albany, we saw a crew trimming trees.  And they used something that looked like a crane but instead of a crane going up from it, it was a telescopic arm that had a saw on the end of it so they could easily reach the tallest of branches.  We were glad to have to wait for the stop light to turn green so we could watch it.

So today, I might do the things I'd planned to do yesterday. And then again, I might not.

Happy Vacation Week - Day 2

My Pork Carnitas were a big hit with the Old Man last night.  Today, I am not cooking, and instead am getting my insulated cooler bag and heading to my favorite restaurant, The Bristol, for a big order of Green Chili Wontons, and their awesome Bristol Burgers.

I need to do a little home-business work today, but it's something that I am going to take outside and do under the gazebo while I enjoy this gorgeous fall day.

Happy Vacation Week - Day 1

I am taking a much needed and well deserved week of vacation.  It sure was nice not having to get up at 6:00 this morning, and it's even nicer to not have to be in the office for a week.

Today's vacation activities: when I got up this morning, I cut up a pork loin and put it in the Crock Pot with some awesome smelling spices and herbs and hopefully it will morph into a great tasting batch of Pork Carnitas for supper tonight.  And after lunch, I will be making a short trek over to visit one of the SF's and do some trading.  I'm bringing her a few months' worth of People magazines and some Equate arthritis-strength acetaminophen in exchange for a pound of Starbucks coffee and two ham steaks.  I think I'm getting the better end of this deal.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's vacation activities.

The Black Cloud Is Still Here

Yesterday morning, we got more bad news about an old family friend.  Shell, the sister of faithful reader SDF, is down in Vanderbilt Hospital with a pretty bad infection.  Her daughter said she was resting comfortably, and was sleeping very peacefully when she visited her yesterday.

Shell is a breast cancer survivor, and let's turn this into something positive -- all of my female faithful readers still need to be diligent about getting a mammogram.

Shell is a very tough fighter, and she has a lot of prayers going up.

That Black Cloud Is Back

I am bigtime sorry to say that the black cloud is back.

My faithful reader and childhood friend SDF's sister is down in Vanderbilt Hospital having some major issues related to her breast cancer.

And my favorite Male Cousin's wife down in Alabama is in the hospital with heart issues.  And she had just gotten over a bout with the 'Rona.

So that damned dark cloud is over us again.  All we can do is pray for betta dayz.

Way To Go, Girls

I am very happy to report that after what seemed like an eternity, we got an egg yesterday from the Girls.  It was just one egg, but we were thrilled nonetheless.  However, we didn't get one today.  But we will take what we can get.

My Day Was Made

I was on my way to Tractor Supply last night to get a bag of feed for the Girls, when my cell rang.  Normally I don't answer it while I am driving but when I saw it was an old, dear friend LB calling, I had to take the call.  And I'm so glad I did.

She was at a restaurant having a bourbon on the rocks while waiting for her dinner, and she said she thought of me and wanted to talk.  Her call made my day. These days, hardly anyone talks; they always text.  I have friends who will text their kids who are in the house a few rooms away instead of talking to them.  And I guess when someone texts you, they were thinking of you, but that can never take the place of an actual conversation.

Thanks again, LB.  You made my day.

Update From The Compound

I took a break from anything to do with social media for a few days, but I am back in action today.  Actually, my Favorite Cousin and her husband came down Friday and stayed with us a few days, and I was too busy having fun and visiting.  It was an impromptu visit, and we all four had a great time eating, drinking and just being together.

Here We Go Again, Again

I got a text at 12:30 late last night from one of our dear friends and our most faithful pray-er, DJ.  She was in the emergency room at Baptist Hospital with some heart issues.

DJ is without a doubt the most faithful pray-er that we know.  Last year when the Old Man was in the hospital, and when my Sweet Mother was in the hospital, she came to the hospital every day and parked in the parking lot and prayed for them.

DJ has had more then her share of troubles this year - her husband died from the virus, and her daughter-in-law has been battling cancer, and just now got out of rehab.

We've had various prayer sessions today here for her, her family, and her doctors.  And we will keep them going.

Here We Go Again

Since the Friday before Memorial Day way back in May, the protests and riots have continued here in the 'Ville.  And I honestly don't see them stopping any time soon.

Pray for bettah dayz.

Update From The Compound

I had every intention of posting yesterday but it just didn't happen.

Yesterday was my sweet mother's birthday.  She would have been 86 years old.  The day hit me harder than I thought it would, but me and the Old Man made it through.

Tonight, he and I talked about some of our favorite memories of her. It sure helped.

Covid19 Update 9-22-20

We got an email from HR late this afternoon saying that we have the 7th confirmed case of the 'Rona at work.  The latest case is in the office.

I'm just thankful that I haven't been around this person; HR notifies anyone that has come in contact with any of the people that have tested positive, and they have left me alone, thank goodness.

Stay tuned.

Monday, Monday

Today was without a doubt the longest Monday that I've had in ages.  It wasn't necessarily a bad Monday, but it sure was a long one.

There was one highlight in the work day - a coworker came over and brought me and my department coworker box lunches leftover from a training session today.  He gave us each a box of pulled pork and pulled chicken with the fixings.  So the Old Man and I won't have to cook tomorrow, and my coworker will have two days worth of lunches.  It's all good.

Covid19 Update 9-20-20

As I was waiting for a carry-out order yesterday, something occurred to me; I had discovered one slightly positive thing that has come from the pandemic.

With the kids doing their schooling at home instead of the classroom, we haven't been bombarded with school fundraiser catalogs.  Since the middle of March, I haven't been guilted into buying wrapping paper or highly overpriced popcorn.

The Girl Scouts were lucky that they came in just under the wire for their annual early spring cookie sales.  I've gone without a lot during this pandemic, but I don't think I could have made it without Do-Si-Do cookies.

That Black Cloud Is Hanging Over Us Again

Yesterday was a very rough day - not directly rough on me or the Old Man, but rough on dear, dear friends close to us.

One dear, life-long friend spent most of the day and night at the emergency room with her 90 year old father. Thanks to answered prayers, she had him back home at about 11:00 last night.

Another dear, life-long friend spent some time in the emergency room last night after falling and breaking her leg.  She, too, was home and in bed by about 11:00 last night.

You can ease up on everyone anytime you want to, 2020.

Update From The Compound

I apologize, faithful readers, for not being as faithful as I have been in the past about posting in TWIT every day.  There's a lot going on here at at work right now, and some evenings I just get busy and forget to post.  I am going to become as disciplined as I was when I first started TWIT and will make a very conscious effort to post every day. And with it looking like the Covid19 isn't going away any time soon, I am going to get back to my regular random posts.

Thanks again to each of you, faithful readers, for faithfully reading TWIT over the years.

Update On The Old Man

It's been a while since I gave an update on the Old Man.

He had his annual visit with his cardiologist this morning. As soon as the doctor walked into to the room, he said "you are the healthiest 86 year old that I know." He went on to say what while some of the blood work numbers were a bit lower than they would like, he said for him to keep on doing what he's been doing, and to see him in a year. The doctor also said "The Lord's hands are truly on you, my friend." This statement came from one of the best cardiologists in the state. But even so, the doctor realized who needs the credit for all that the Old Man has been through with surviving triple by-pass and then the aneurysm.

We are thanking the Great Physician for all He has done for my dear father in the past few years, and for all that He will continue to do in the years ahead.

New Product Review

When I eat any form of chicken nuggets, I always mix some hot sauce with my ranch dressing, and it's never failed me yet.

Imagine my joy when I was at the grocery on Saturday and saw Frank's RedHot ranch dip mix.  Frank's is the only hot sauce that I use, so I immediately grabbed not one but two packets of the dip mix.

As soon as I got home I mixed it into a carton of sour cream even before I put away my groceries and put it in the fridge to get it all settled in.

Believe me when I tell you that when I started dipping plain Lays potato chips into it, I had to make myself put the carton back in the fridge.  Yep, it was that good.  It's a bit hot, but it's oh so good.

Frank's RedHot Ranch Dip mix most definitely gets two thumbs up from TWIT.  I would give it three thumbs up if I had an extra thumb.

Covid19 Update 9-13-20

I got a text yesterday afternoon from my Alabama Cousin, who was ecstatic that his wife had tested negative! He said that it's been a very rough two+ weeks for her, but as I reported earlier, she's slowly getting her strength and appetite back.

Saturday, September 12, 2020

Covid19 Update 9-11-20

I am very happy to report that my Alabama Cousin's wife is doing pretty good after getting the 'Rona.  She's been quarantined for almost two weeks now, and when I talked to her this morning, she said she's feeling better, but is still very tired and that it's taking longer to get her strength back than she thought. She said on a positive note, friends have been bringing them food left and right!

Update From The Compound

I've been using the antibiotic cream for almost 24 hours, and I think (key word) it is starting to work.  Last night was the first night in a week that I didn't have to get up and practically take a bath in Benadryl cream.

Please keep the prayers going that the relief will continue.

Wednesday, September 9, 2020

Update From The Compound

I need your prayers, faithful readers.  For the past week, I've been fighting a mega itcy red rash.  I called our insurance company's Tele Doctor on Friday, and he said to use hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl cream for a few days, and said to call back if it didn't work.  Well, it didn't.  I called this morning, and sent pictures of the rash.  He said it was something I can't pronounce, and prescribed some heavy duty antibiotic cream.  I picked it up on the way home today, along with antiseptic soap, and am going to scrub down tonight and then get all greased up.  I'd appreciate prayers for itching relief and for the rash to go away.

This Day In Music History

Music history was made on this day back in 1972.  On this day, Dolly Parton wrote "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" - two of her biggest songs.  You sure can't top that, I don't think.

Derby #146 Wrap Up

The historic 146th running of the Kentucky Derby is just a memory now,  but even with no people at Churchill Downs to watch, it was still a great Derby day for me.  I won a $432 exacta! It was the most I've ever won at the track.  Me nor the Old Man had the winning Derby horse, but we didn't care.   As soon as the Derby was over, I immediately logged into my Twin Spires betting account and withdrew my winnings. A good time was definitely had by all; that is, all two of us that were here at The Compound

Covid19 Update 9-5-20

It was a beautiful Saturday, and the sun sure was shining bright on my old Kentucky home.  But due to the 'Rona, they held the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in September, and without spectators.  It was very weird to watch the races and see Churchill Downs empty.  But it is what it is.

Friday, September 4, 2020

Flashback Friday

With this being Derby weekend, my mind is on horse racing, and I can't help but think about one of my all-time favorite songs, "You're So Vain".  The line I love is "I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won."

I have to thank Stacy once again for giving me the 45 of the song over 40 years ago.  It's still an all time favorite.

Covid19 Update 9-3-20

My Alabama Cousin got his test results back today and thank the Lord he tested negative.  His wife is still quarantining in the house away from him, and she said that her cough had eased up some.  She still has 11 more quarantine days to go, then she will get tested again and hopefully will test negative.

Crime Update

We had a record 4 homicides by shootings yesterday here in the 'Ville.  That brings us to 108 homicides for the year.  With Derby and the holiday coming up, I'm expecting more this weekend.  Heaven help our city.

Tuesday, September 1, 2020

Covid19 Update 9-1-20

We got word last night that my cousin down in Alabama's wife tested positive for the 'Rona.  She went to the ER with bronchitis, a UTI, a high fever and a bad cough.

They sent her home to quarantine for 14 days, and her husband (my cousin) went today to get tested.  He will get his results in 2-3 days.

I know people get tired of me going on and on about this but it's serious.  Please wear masks, people, and don't go out to restaurants or parties.

Update From The Compound

I was not in the mood to post last night, faithful readers.

My Bitsy Girl didn't make it.  I gave her her farewell yesterday evening when I got home.  I hurt me because I knew her four sisters literally killed her.

There will be no more extra spaghetti for the remaining four Girls.

Sunday, August 30, 2020

Update From The Compound

Yesterday was a very rough day for one of my Girls. I went out to give them some leftovers yesterday morning and noticed this hen, who I named Bitsy, had a big patch of feather torn out from her back and side, and was bleeding.  It didn't take long to figure out she had been attacked.  But not by a fox or racoon; the fencing and doors were very secure so nothing got in.  She had been attacked by her four sisters. As soon as I told my Favorite Cousin about this (she also raises chickens) she said that the others attacked her to establish the proverbial pecking order. I guess losing their other sister a couple of weeks ago got the hierarchy out of whack or something like that.

There wasn't anything I could do for her - it's not like you would take a chicken to the vet.  So I just said a prayer for her not to be in pain or suffer.  She moved around some yesterday - I went out about every hour to check on her and each time she was in a different spot.  And the same thing this morning - she had moved and was sitting down underneath the coop, hopefully a safe spot for her.

I gave the other four Girls a big earful yesterday, for all it was worth.

As always, stay tuned.

Covid19 Update 8-29-20

I made my weekly pilgrimage to Krogers today, and when I pulled into the parking lot, you would have sworn it was a snow-eve.  The parking lot was packed.  And also the store.

I was able to get everything I wanted, but I did notice that once again, the Spam shelves were bare.  The was plenty of toilet paper, paper towels, and hand sanitizer but no Spam.  Go figure.

Covid19 Update 8-28-20

I checked on my two friends who got the 'Rona this week.  They both said they were doing OK - they said they were extremely tired and achy, and still running low fevers,  but their coughs weren't very bad (their exact words).  And no, neither one of these friends knew each other nor came in contact with each other.

Prayers are still going up for a speedy, pain-free recovery for them, and for no passing of the 'Rona to their immediate family members.

Update From The Compound, Etc

I had a phone call today, and I am proud of myself for handling it the way I did.  It was from a very nice, almost upscale, nursing home in the area.  They called to see if we still were looking for a place for my Sweet Mother.  A friend works there, and I had called them last October and they put us on the waiting list.  I took a deep breath, and told the lady that my mother had died in November and we didn't need a nursing home now.  She was silent for a few seconds and then gave her sympathies.

I was proud of myself for saying those words "my mother had died" without losing it.  I'm getting there, but it sure is taking a long time.

Covid19 Update 8-26-20

We had to have the garage door people come to replace the garage door opener, and even though the repairman was working in a garage with the door closed when the heat index was over 100 degrees, he still wore his mask.  I was impressed.

Tuesday, August 25, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-25-20

Another friend tested positive yesterday for the 'Rona.  He said that he didn't feel this sick when he had pneumonia a few years ago.  He's quarantined at home and not in the hospital, thank goodness.  He said he's pretty sure he caught it when he was carelessly eating at a restaurant a week or so ago.

I pray he has a speedy and full recovery.

Monday, August 24, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-24-20

I found out this afternoon that another friend has gotten the 'Rona.  I hadn't actually seen her in person since February, and she has been as cautious and careful as I have.  But she still caught it.  She had a fever that persisted for a couple of days, and then she was tested.  She said she didn't feel this sick when she had pneumonia a few years ago.

Prayers are going for my friend.

Covid19 Update 8-23-20

I was up early this morning and ran to the Donut Lady to get some awesome jelly filled donuts for our breakfast.  While everyone I encountered was wearing a mask, only me and the Donut Lady were wearing them properly with our noses covered up.  So much for that.

Saturday, August 22, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-22-20

I was happy to see 100% mask participation today on my weekly trip to Krogers.  And I didn't see anyone with their masks below their noses, either.  That restored my faith in my fellow Kentuckians.

Friday, August 21, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-21-20

I called this a few months ago, faithful readers.  Churchill Downs announced today that the Kentucky Derby will still be held on the first Saturday in September, but without fans there at the track.  I called it. Let's pray that the horses, trainers, and workers will still be safe that week.

Covid19 Update 8-20-20

JCPS is starting their in-home schooling on Tuesday, but I've heard from quite a few people connected to JCPS that the kids won't actually be in school until after the first of the year.  My heart goes out to the parents having to make sure their kids are taken care of while they still have to work.

COvid19 Update 8-19-20

A friend dropped off a bottle of local homemade hand sanitizer to us this evening.  It's made with 90 proof alcohol, and they bought from a local distillery.  We're glad that they thought of us.  But the Old Man and I think we would have rather it in drinkable form.  Just saying.

Tuesday, August 18, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-18-20

The shit got more real at work today.  At about 4:00 we all were notified that an office employee was confirmed positive.  As of the time I am typing this post, I haven't been notified that I had been around this coworker, and for that I am very thankful that I worked from home last week and was on vacation the week before.

Stay tuned.

Monday, August 17, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-17-20

You can't imagine how happy I was to hear that my coworker and his two kids all three tested negative today.  I'm not ashamed to say I didn't sleep at all last night for worrying about them and those of us in the department that came in contact with him.

People can bag on me if they want to - I really don't give a rat's ass.  All I care about is keeping my 86 year old father with heart failure and kidney failure safe.  Nuff said.

Covid19 Update 8-16-20

I went to one of our favorite Mexican restaurants to get Sunday dinner, and was happy to find that the servers were wearing masks.  However, one of them that was rolling up silverware in napkins wasn't wearing gloves and had his mask down over his nose.  I'm glad I just got our food and no silverware and left.

Saturday, August 15, 2020

Covid19 Update 8-15-20

At my weekly trip to Krogers this morning, I am very happy to report that I saw 100% proper wearing of masks.  At a stop at the Dollar Tree, not so much.  100% of the shoppers had masks, but only half of them were wearing them covering their mouths AND noses.  So much for that.

Covid19 Update 8-14-20

The shit got a little more real at work on Friday.  One coworker's live-in girlfriend and her son both tested positive for the virus.  He and his two kids will be tested Monday.  They sent him home yesterday at lunchtime, and called me back into the office on Monday.

Stay tuned.

Update From The Compound

We  sure had an exciting afternoon.  We had a storm come up, and lightning struck the garage.  Luckily, it hit the sheet metal vent and not the roof, so we didn't see any fire.  After about a half an hour, we had everything reset and everything in the garage was working.  But it sure could have been a whole lot worse.

Covid19 Update 8-12-20

So, there will be no people in the infield on Derby, nor in any general admission seats.  Like I said before, I still think they will end up not letting anyone in.  I'll be surprised if they do.

Stay tuned.

Update From The Compound

People might think I'm crazy for saying this, but to me and The Old Man, it makes sense.

Yesterday, one of our Girls died.  And yesterday, we didn't see any of the colorful yellow finches around their feeder, and we didn't see any sparrows, wrens, or even the doves around the big feeder.

Coincidence?  I don't think so.  I think all of the birds at The Compound knew what had happened.

Sad News From The Compound

I am very sad to report that we lost one of our Girls today.

I noticed yesterday morning that she was either being extremely broody, or just was sick.  I picked her up last night and she didn't squawk, so I knew something was wrong.  But she came out of the coop when her five sisters were eating their favorite snack, mashed potatoes, so I thought there was hope.

I checked on her this morning before work, and she was in one of the nesting boxes, and once again, didn't squawk when I picked her up and loved on her.  But tonight when I came home from work and checked on her, she was a goner.

RIP, my Girl.  You would be hard pressed to find any other chicken that was loved on and cared for and spoiled like her and her five sisters.

Crime Update 8-9-20

It's only August 9, and we've had 8 homicides so far this month.  Last Tuesday night, there were 3.

And also, police arrested 12 protesters last night; most of those arrested were threatening people in cars that didn't join their protests.

I hope sometime soon I can find something happy to report.

Covid19 Update 8-8-20

After a trip to Lowes, Krogers, and Walgreens today, there was 100% mask wearing.  However, there was 25% (at least) people wearing the masks below their noses.  Why even bother????

Covid19 Update 8-7-20

Yesterday afternoon, it was announced that basically the Kentucky State Fair is cancelled.  They will have the World Championship Horse Show and the livestock competitions, but only participants (meaning, the riders and handlers) will be allowed in.

I'm going to call it now - the next big announcement will be something similar with the Derby.

Stay tuned.

Covid19 Update 8-6-20

I made a quick trip to Krogers today for one thing I wanted, and while I was there, I took a stroll down the crucial isles.  It seems we're back to the toilet paper, paper towels, and disinfectant wipes shortages again.

Covid19 Update 8-5-20

The Old Man and I ventured out today for haircuts.  As it was two months ago, things at the salon were as sanitary as they could be.

Our stylist said that The Old Man could wait inside instead of sitting out in the car while I got my haircut, but he said he'd rather just stay in the van.  The temp was only upper 70's, so he said he was perfectly comfortable sitting there with the windows down reading.

The stylists at this salon (and I'm guessing at all salons) disinfect the combs, brushes, and scissors after every person, and they spray down the chair, and today were using disposable capes.  The stylists wear masks, as of course, do the people getting hair cuts.

On a quasi-related note, with the Indy 500 announcing that they are going to run the race without people in the stands, it has people here in Louisville wondering if Churchill Downs will change their plans and do the same with the Derby next month.  A couple of days ago they stopped selling tickets, so I'm wondering if that's what they have in mind.

Stay tuned.

Covid19 Update 8-4-20

As I type this, some friends are waiting results from their Covid19 tests.  One friend and her boyfriend are anxiously waiting their results.  He was exposed last week; his coworker that he works very closely with, riding together in a truck all day tested positive. They both are very nerved up, and I can't blame them one bit.

Another friend and her daughter are both waiting test results.  They were exposed while on vacation in Michigan.  A relative had tested positive a day after they were together.

Stay tuned.

Covid19 Upate 8-3-20

I'm on vacation this week, and went to one of our favorite places for carryout for a late lunch/early supper.  While I was social distancing waiting at the bar for my food, I witness one of the workers denying someone entrance because they didn't have a mask on.  I told her that if things were "normal", I would have high-fived her.

Covid19 Update 8-2-20

We interrupt today's regular Covid19 update to bring you more protest news.

Sunday night starting at about 9:00, a caravan of over 100 cars of BLM protestors were in our hood.  They came up our road in front of The Compound, honking and yelling "Breonna Taylor."  They went up our road, and throughout other neighborhoods in our area.  But from what I heard, it was peaceful, other than the yelling and horn honking.

This was the most excitement we had in our neighborhood since February when the big wreck happened and the SUV was upside down in our front yard.

Covid19 Update 8-1-20

There was 100% mask wearing today at Krogers. And I went to a different Krogers, too.   At Tractor Supply - not so much.  Even though they had the signs saying masks are required, during the 10 minutes I was in the store it was 75/25.

Covid19 Update 7-31-20

Our department head today asked us if we would like to work from home for the next few weeks.  I don't even need to tell you how fast I said I would.  I will know on Wednesday.  In the meanwhile, I am on vacation next week and I will be enjoying just being at home not doing anything.

Stay tuned.

Covid19 Update 7-30-20

We knew this day would come, and I am very surprised it didn't come sooner.  We have our first confirmed case at work.  It is from a worker out in the factory - that's all we know.  When we got to work this morning, we had an email waiting for us from HR.

As for me, I am doing all I still can.  I wear my mask when I am anywhere except in my cubicle, and I get my temperature taken every morning when I come in.  I wash my hands so much that a few layers of skin has been taken off.  That's all I can do at work.

Covid19 Update 7-29-20

I stopped at Krogers this morning on the way to work, and just like for the past two weeks, there was 100% mask wearing.  But in the past few weeks, I've noticed that Krogers no longer has an employee sanitizing the shopping carts; instead, they have a rack with a bunch of spray bottles of sanitizer and a bunch of rolls of paper towels, along with a big jug of hand sanitizer, for you to sanitize the carts and yourself.  But at least they are doing that for their customers.

Covid19 Update 7-28-20

As of midnight last night, the bars in the state are closed down for at least two weeks.  And the restaurants are back at 25% capacity.

And it seems that most of the Miami Marlins baseball team has the 'Rona.  Two of our beloved Cincinnati Reds players were tested yesterday as well.

Yet in a week they will have a bizillion people here for the Hot Rod Nationals, and a week later they will still have the Kentucky State Fair.

Stay tuned.

Happy Life Day

I was celebrating Life Day so much yesterday that I forgot to post.

It was Life Day - the anniversary of when I had the big wreck that damned near killed me.  On the anniversary of the wreck, I celebrate Life Day.

Yesterday, I cooked a bunch - something I normally don't do.  And the Old Man and I watched a Reds game, and listened to old school country music - things that we both love.

I was happy to be able to celebrate Life Day.  But then again, I celebrate Life Day every day.

Covid19 Update 7-25-20

I learned something today that I had been wanting to get the true story on and not fake news.  In the state of Kentucky, it is not illegal for you to wear a mask while you conceal carry.  Facebook and others were full of the fake news, saying it was against the law to wear a mask and conceal carry.  It took a month or so but I was able to get the truth.  I don't know about Indiana, Tennessee, or Ohio.  But I do know for a fact it is not illegal to wear a mask while you pack in Kentucky.

Covid19 Update 7-24-20

We discussed at work today how it sucks for our coworkers that have retired in the past few months - due to the virus, they haven't been given the usual proper send off with a big cake and a party.  But at least they get to retire and won't have to work anymore.

Covid19 Update 7-23-20

I got word today of yet another family member of a dear friend who has the Virus.  She's in her late 80's, and in otherwise good health.  Our prayers are going up for a problem-free recovery for her.

Covid19 Update 7-22-20

On Wednesday, the Indiana Governor took the same steps as our Governor Andy did a couple of weeks ago - starting Monday, masks will be mandatory in the state of Indiana.  If only more Governors would do the same.

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

Covid19 Update 7-21-20

I read that Monday was the 55th day of protests here in the 'Ville.  The more they show the protesters on the news, the more I see them wearing masks.  Good for them.

Our Governor and Mayor are both nerved up and concerned about the rising number of cases here in the city and state.  But no matter what they say, the majority of people aren't going to comply - until they or a loved one gets the virus.  But I can't worry about them - all I can do is what I've been doing: wearing my mask, staying away from crowds, and only going out to the store when necessary.

Covid19 Update 7-20-20

I found out today that a friend in South Carolina had been in close contact with two people at his church that have caught The Virus.  He was tested today, and is self-quarantining for 14 days.  He has no symptoms, but then again, it seems a lot of never have symptoms, either.  I pray for the best for him.

Happy National Ice Cream Day

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Covid19 update to wish everyone a very happy National Ice Cream Day.

It's still not to late to celebrate.  The Old Man and I just finished having some awesome Blue Bell Peach and Homemade Vanilla ice cream.

Take a few minutes out of your busy evening and eat some ice cream.  You'll thank me later.

Covid19 Update 7-18-20

I am very happy to report that on my weekly trip to Krogers this morning, the mask-to-no-mask ratio was 100/0.  Sorry that it took an executive order from the Governor, but we'll take it.

And on my brief trip into Walgreens, the ratio was also 100/0.

Covid19 Update 7-17-20

I was happy of our Kentucky Supreme Court today for upholding the Executive Orders that Governor Beshear enacted a few days ago.  Take that Cameron.

That's all I got to say today.

Covid19 Update 7-16-20

Our Jefferson County school superintendent today recommended that schools not have in class sessions in the new year.  While I don't have a dog in this fight, I do have an opinion - it makes it very hard on the parents with younger kids who will need to have someone at home to watch them.  I just hope and pray for the best for everyone.

Covid19 Update 7-15-20

We got word late Wednesday afternoon that another dear friend from church had died due to complications after she had the virus.  She fought hard, but the virus had really taken a toll on her 88 year old body.

As I said before, when you hear the daily statistics on the news, it really hits home when you know someone that is one of the daily death statistics.

Covid19 Update 7-14-20

I am happy to report that I heard from a dear old friend today who had two tests in the past two weeks because he was exposed to his boss that had tested positive, and both tests were negative.  Praise the Lord for that.

I had to make a quick trip to Wal-Mart on my way home from work today, and in the brief time I was in the store, the mask-to-no-mask ratio was 90/10 -- still even after the state mandate.

Monday, July 13, 2020

Covid19 Update 7-13-20

The numbers continue to rise not just in Kentucky, but most of the states.  And yet people still don't seem to care enough to do anything about it.  Not much else I can say.

Sunday, July 12, 2020

Covid19 Update 7-12-20

I just got back from a trip to Wal-Mart, and the mask-to-no-mask ratio there tonight was 90/10.  Slightly less than at Kroger yesterday, but I'm happy that 90% of the shoppers in there care.

Saturday, July 11, 2020

Covid19 Update 7-11-20

Even with the state-wide mask mandate, today's trip to the liquor store and to Krogers was 95/5 mask-to-no-mask ratio.

I was shocked that I was the only person in the liquor store wearing a mask out of all of the customers and workers.  The only reason I went into the store instead of drive-thru was because I wanted to get my Powerball tickets.  And at Krogers, I only saw one WT (white trash) family of four not wearing masks.  And they all had the look that said "I dare you to say something about us not wearing a mask."  But they sure were buying the hell out of Mountain Dew and Monster energy drinks.  Bud I digress.  I will take the 95% of people I encountered today wearing masks.

Covid19 Update 7-10-20

At 5:00 today, the mandate went into effect that everyone in Kentucky needs to wear a mask.  You would think that the mandate asked for people to cut off an arm.

Covid19 Update 7-9-20

Just as I thought, Governor Andy has mandated face masks in the state for at least the next 30 days.  It will be for all retail facilities, grocery stores, bars, restaurants, etc.  And also outdoors if you can't social distance for six feet.

I stand with my Governor.

Covid19 Update 7-8-20

Our friend's mother is still hanging in there, even after the toll the virus took on her little body.  If it's the Lord's will, she will surprise us all and pull through again.

Our Governor said he will be having a press conference on the 9th.  My guess is he will enact an executive order for mandatory masks state-wide.  Stay tuned.

Tuesday, July 7, 2020

Covid19 Update 7-7-20

I got an email today advertising discount Kentucky State Fair tickets on sale.  Sorry - I'll pass. I can't begin to imagine how they will have the state fair set up to comply with social distancing, masks, etc.  All I know is I won't be there.   This will be the first state fair that I haven't attended in decades.  And I'm OK with it.

Covid19 Update 7-6-20

I heard from a friend today whose husband cancelled a trip later this week down to Florida to do some hiking.  This restores my faith a little bit.

Covid19 Update 7-5-20

I had a call from our friend at church whose mother is just clinging to life after having the Covid19 virus.  She recovered from it last month, but it just took it's toll on her weak, frail body.  She's still hanging in there, but the family is keeping a bedside vigil.  Thank goodness her facility has lifted the restrictions and the family is able to be with her in her final days.

Covid19 Update 7-4-20

I went to the grocery on Saturday morning, and the mask-to-no-mask ratio was still about 50/50.  And I noticed that Walgreens had taken down their sign saying a mask was required to enter the store.  As I was waiting in line to check out, I noticed that the majority of the people in the store were still wearing masks.  That restored a little faith

Before it got too dark yesterday, I ran up to WalMart and I would say their ratio was also 50/50.

Covid19 Update 7-3-20

In an unfortunate addendum to yesterday's post, on Wednesday we had a total of four homicides, and another homicide about 10 minutes from The Compound.  That brings the 2020 total to 63.  I'm pretty sure that the shooters in these homicides could not have given a rat's ass about Covid19 when they murdered the victims.

Covid19 Update 7-2-20

We interrupt today's regularly scheduled Covid19 update to bring you news from the protests.

This morning before noon, a 20 year old young man was shot and killed at the hot spot of the downtown protests - Jefferson Square Park.

There are no words.

Covid19 Update 7-1-20

We started a new month today, and unfortunately it's starting out with the pandemic ramping back up.  And POTUS is now saying he's in favor of a nationwide mandate for masks.  I am first to agree with those that say the masks are uncomfortable, especially when the heat index is over 100.  But I will continue to wear mine even though others don't.  Stay tuned.

Covid 19 Update 6-30-20

We interrupt today's Covid19 Update to bring a more somber message.

Today would have been my parents' 62nd anniversary.  I know it was very hard on the Old Man today.  And I am so thankful for my Favorite Cousin calling him this morning and talking and laughing with him for over a half an hour, and I am thankful for his Favorite Cousin coming up from Breckenridge County yesterday to spend the day with him.

I'd been dreading this day for a few months, just because I knew it would be hard on him.  But I had my own meltdown earlier at work.  I was listening to Sirius and they played George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and I had to run to the bathroom so nobody would see my crying.  That's a hard song to handle any day, much less on a day like today.

But we made it through this day.  We had a great supper, and are watching our favorite Andy and Barney, and in a bit we will have some peach cobbler and ice cream.  And I know my Sweet Mother is smiling down on us right now.

Covid19 Update 6-29-20

I talked to an old friend today, and he is self-quarantining for 14 days after being around someone at his church that tested positive for the virus.  His dad and brother are just now recovering from having caught the virus, and he is making sure they don't catch it again from him. He said he has plenty of food, liquor, toilet paper and snacks to make it through the next 14 days.

TWIT and I wish him well.

Covid19 Update 6-28-20

I guess the virus hasn't affected the protesters in downtown Louisville for the past month, because they are still downtown protesting.  And last night, a young man in his late 20's was shot and killed.  The police didn't shoot him; but they don't know who did.  From what little I read about it, the young man was a photographer, so I'm guessing he was down there taking pictures.  Regardless, it was senseless, and shit like this happening in my hometown just keeps on breaking my heart.

Covid19 Update 6-27-20

I made my regularly scheduled trip to Krogers today, and I'm happy to report that the mask-to-no-mask ratio was back up to 50/50.

Before going to the store, I went to a parking lot location to get a half a bushel of Georgia peaches from the "Peaching Around" peach truck.  The mask-to-no-mask ration there was 100/0.  That impressed me.

Covid19 Update 6-26-20

Friday, Florida, Arizona and Texas all three saw more new cases than pretty much they've had all along.  Florida alone had over 9,000 new cases.  I guess that's that they get for letting the masses go to the beaches and bars.

At work, the company president announced that they would not be having our infamous National Sales Meeting extravaganza that we have every two years.  It was scheduled for May, then pushed back to August, and today, they said that they would have some virtual meetings in September.  Good call.

Thursday, June 25, 2020

Covid19 Update 6-25-20

I'm not sure where to start tonight.  The schools will be opening back up in a couple of months, while spending millions on masks and sanitizer; they are going to have the Kentucky State Fair; and today they announced they will have 60,000+ attend the Kentucky Derby.  And just today I read about a family in Texas that had a surprise birthday party a couple of weeks ago, and as of today, 19 of the family that attended have the virus - two of which are elderly and one battling cancer, and all three are hospitalized.
Let's just leave it there for tonight.

Wednesday, June 24, 2020

Covid19 Update 6-24-20

I made a quick trip to Krogers before work this morning, and the mask-to-non-mask ratio was down -- I would say this morning it was 20/80.  A friend went to her Krogers this afternoon and she reported the same ratio.

As I said before, that's OK.  I will still wear a mask, so please don't bag on me for wearing one, and I won't bag on you for not wearing one.   This ain't over yet, folks.

Covid19 Update 6-23-20

Today was the primary election day here in Jefferson County, and I'd like to give a big shout out to our county clerk Bobbie Holsclaw for helping get absentee ballots for anyone in the county that requested one.  With the virus still going on, they made just one polling place in Jefferson County - at the fairgrounds.  But it was just way easier for us to get online and request the mail-in ballots, and then fill them out and mail them back.  How much simpler could it be?  And there was even a website you could go to and get verification that your ballot was received.

Covid19 Update 6-22-20

We interrupt today's Covid19 Update to give a Riot/Protestor update. The Walgreens on the Greenbelt at Terry Road was hit a few days ago by the thugs.  All of the windows were covered with plywood today when I passed by on my way home.  And the homicides from shootings is on the rise the past few weeks, too.  As my sweet Mother would have said, it's a sad state of affairs.

Now back to our regularly scheduled Covid19 update.  Yesterday, our dear friends Bev and Painter Steve came by to wish the Old Man a Happy Fathers Day.  And they hugged us, and we hugged them back.  It was such a good feeling to hug someone besides my father.  They were carrying their masks when they got out of the car, and would have worn them if we had ours on.  But we sat on the porch, just about the obligatory six feet apart from each other and had a great time visiting.

Sunday, June 21, 2020

Happy Fathers Day

TWIT and I would like to wish a very Happy Fathers Day to the Old Man, aka my father.  We had a pretty good day, watching it rain for most of the day, but that's OK.  We had a great Fathers Day dinner, and have had a great time so far just being together.

One thing bothers me. If you look at Facebook today (or "Fakebook" as a good friend of mine calls it) there were posts galore of Fathers Days well wishes, along with the customary tons of pictures that Facebook friends posted of their fathers.  It really bothered me to see those pictures and then know the backstory - how many of them that posted the pictures just because they are obsessed with posting on Facebook.  I could count on both hands the number of Facebook friends who bag on their fathers, and yet posted pictures wishing them Happy Fathers Day, making everything think that they are so devoted and proud of their fathers.

I didn't post any pictures on FB of my dad, mainly because he doesn't like pictures of him being posted, so I respect that.  But anyone that knows me knows how much I love him and am devoted to him.  I don't need Facebook to prove that to anyone.

Happy Fathers Day, Old Man.  I love you, mas.

Covid19 Update 6-20-20

I made my weekly trip to Krogers this morning, and also stopped at a local farmer's market.  Combined, I would say the mask-to-no-mask ratio was about 30/60.  I guess people there think the "virus" is over.  Let's see what they say after get updates from Tulsa this weekend.

The majority of my close [talk to everyday] friends still wear masks, and from what they say, they will continue to wear them.  I applaud them.  As I said before - if you don't want to wear a mask, that's fine.  Just stop bagging on people like me that choose to wear one.
