This Day In History

On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley makes his Las Vegas debut, with Shecky Green and the Freddy Martin Orchestra, at the New Frontier Hotel. The reaction is so negative, his four-week booking ends after two weeks.

But he turned all around and for a period, the King owned Vegas.  From 1969 till just before his death in 1977, The King performed at the Las Vegas Hilton to sold out shows every night. And there's a statue in front of the Las Vegas Hilton to prove it. On my many trips to Las Vegas, I can honestly say there's not another statue in the city proclaiming something like that.  I just wish I could have attended one of his Las Vegas shows.
