Mullet Watch

This has been a record week for mullet sightings.  I spotted a perfectly styled long gray mullet this morning as I was pulling out of a shopping center parking lot.  He was coming out of Harbor Freight. It was one of the better mullets I've seen over the years.

Mullet Watch

I ran to Dollar General Store this morning, and I spotted an awesome femme-mullet.  It was peroxide blonde, and all business in the front and a lot of party in the back.  I could tell she spent quite a while getting it ready for her trip to the store.

Enough, Already

I cannot begin to tell you how disgusted and sick I am over hearing nothing but Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.  I am not a "Swiftie" but I will say she is a pretty good role model for the teenage girls.  But I am sick of seeing a bizillion links about her and Travis.   Every morning when I log on to check my AOL email, all I see are posts about them.  Enough already.  I'm done.

Here We Go Again

After a "cool" day yesterday (the high was only 87) the heat wave continues.  The weatherazzi is calling for highs in the mid to upper 90s for the next few days. On a non-related note, Christmas is six months from today.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

For the past two weeks, we've been smack dab in the middle of a wicked heat wave, with highs in the upper 90's.  It's been so hot, the Old Man hasn't complained about the a/c being too cold.

A miracle happened this morning - we got a small bit of rain, and as of 11:00 this morning, it's only 77 degrees.  And the weatherazzi says the high today will be "only" 87.  I'll believe it when I see it.

Mullet Watch

This young mullet was spotted yesterday by Diva Stacy at an indoor trampoline park.  This young lad has the makings of a great full-grown mullet.

This Means War

I went out to the garage yesterday to get something from the freezer and lo and behold, as soon as I got out on the porch, I saw Hogzilla standing on the dirt pile that we have in the back yard [to fill in the big sink hole].  The varmint was standing on his hind legs, as if to say "I'm king of the mountain."  I immediately got a gallon of ammonia and poured it all around the dirt pile, and also poured some around the perimeter of the barn.  Ammonia is supposedly (key word) a deterrent for ground hogs.  We'll see.

Stay tuned.

TWIT and I would like to congratulate the Pleasure Ridge Park Panthers and the UK Wildcats on their big wins yesterday.  PRP is one win away from going to the state final four, and UK is one win away from going to the college world series.

Good Luck, PRP

TWIT and I would like to wish the Pleasure Ridge Park Panthers good luck tonight in the regional finals for baseball.  If I hadn't gone to a private school, I would have gone to PRP so I still consider myself a proud panther.

We are PRP Proud here at The Compound.   Go Panthers!

Flashback Friday

When I was a kid, once a month a semi with a trailer would come to a local shopping center parking lot, and would take aluminum cans and newspapers to recycle.  It was a pretty easy way to get some extra money.  They had a huge scale and would weigh the newspapers and aluminum and then would pay you out.

Every summer when the Catholic picnic season was going on, an old family friend named Dot would take me and her two sons [who were like brothers to me] to the picnics on Friday and Saturday nights, and me and the boys would walk around carrying garbage bags and would pick up the empty beer cans.  Believe me when I tell you there were always a lot. My Grandpa made a can crusher, and the week after the picnic I would be out in the garage crushing the cans.  Then either my Sweet Mother or the Old Man would load up the trunk of the car with my bags and newspapers and take me up to the recycling truck.

They paid so much per pound for the aluminum and newspapers, and every so often you could spin the wheel and get extra per pound.  As a kid, this was like the big jackpot wheel on the Price Is Right.

Thankful Thursday

I am very thankful today.  First, for a friend that I took to the doctor today.  She's been having major issues for the past few weeks since she was put on meds, and it has affected her walking and stability.  The doctor today recommended doubling up on one of the meds that will hopefully help this issue.

I am also thankful for an old time friend from church, who had some issues and a fall and had to go to rehab for a few weeks.  He's been home now  a week and says he feels much better and stronger.

I am also thankful that the Old Man felt like going out to eat yesterday afternoon.  He's 90, and I know he has aches and pains in his back and hip, but he felt good yesterday and we had a great supper out at our favorite Mexican place.

I am also thankful for my retirement fund from ZCO.  I can't say this enough.

I am also thankful for my LazyBoy recliner, which I think I will get into in a few minutes with a cup of coffee.

Wet Wednesday

The last time the Old Man and I had haircuts, it was raining.  When we went to his cardiologist's appointment in December, it was on a rainy Wednesday.  When we went to his primary care doctor's appointment in February, it was on a rainy Wednesday.  When we went to the heart failure center appointment last month . . . yes, you guessed it - it was on a rainy Wednesday.  We have haircuts later this morning, and true to form, it is a rainy Wednesday.  Enough, already.

It's The Little Things

They say it's the little things that make us happy, and I have to agree.

I got a new set of towels, wash cloths, and hand towels for me and the Old Man.  Our favorite towels were getting worn out so we said it was time for new ones. We tried them today and we could not be more pleased.  The main thing is that they are so soft. And they look nice in our bathrooms.  Yep, it's the little things in life that make us happy.

My Favorite Day Of The Year

Ode To Billy Joe

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and we walked back to the house to eat
And mama hollered at the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said she got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge
Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
Papa said to mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas
"Well, Billie Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please"
"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow"
Mama said it was shame about Billie Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
And brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece of apple pie, you know it just don't seem right"
"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billie Joe
Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round, papa caught it and he died last Spring
And now mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Easy Like Sunday Morning

As I type this, it is very peaceful here at The Compound.  But for the past few months, it has been very irritating at bedtime with loud tree frogs.  Add to that the Big German Shepherd next door barking, and it easily gets on my nerves.  But we have one more thing to add to that equation - Duke the big and extremely loud rooster next door.  Those all three make for unpeaceful sleep.  The tree frogs start at about 9:00 and stop at about midnight.  Duke starts crowing loudly at about 5:00 in the morning, and keeps up all day long until almost sundown.  The Big German Shepherd will start barking after dark, when he goes out the doggie door into his backyard.  As if this wasn't bad enough, we have the cicadas coming soon.  I might pack up some clothes and take the Old Man to a hotel for a month so we can get some sleep.

Stay tuned.
