Happy Birthday, Willie Nelson

TWIT and I would like to wish a very happy 90th birthday to Willie Nelson.

The Old Man and I won't be smoking a joint to honor him, but we will have some tequila to celebrate his birthday.

Flashback Friday

Derby is a week from tomorrow - and on this day they usually opened what we call the Chow Wagons at various places around town.  The Chow Wagon consisted of food booths, beer booths, and a stage where great local bands would play.  Until about 10 years ago, they had a Chow Wagon in our hood, and in 3 or 4 various locations around town, including downtown on the river front.

At our local Chow Wagon, it was more like a family reunion.  A lot of my work friends and our family friends would gather there and have a few beers and a bratwurst or corn dog and visit and listen to great  music.  Friend's bands would usually play, and a great time was had by all.

Now, they just have the one location down on the riverfront, and they don't even call it the Chow Wagon anymore.  Those were the days.

So Much For That

Well, I had one day of sun therapy.  Today it is cool, drizzly and no sun in sight.  The forecast is not looking good for my sun therapy sessions, but it is what it is.

Let The Sun Therapy Resume

As I type this, it is 66 and sunny today, with no wind.  So I put on my tar lotion and my hand-made tank top and went out and sat in the back field for my prescribed 20 minutes.

I haven't been able to get out in the sun for 4 or 5 days because it has been too cool, but I continued to put the tar lotion on my eczema spots, and I think it is really helping.  Combined with the cortisone shot from last Monday, my itching has almost stopped, thank the Lord.

As long as it isn't cool, I will continue to go out each day for the 20 minutes and soak up the sun.

Stay tuned.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

It was up to 87 degrees on Thursday.  The past three nights, the temps have gone down to the low 30s.  We're having a heatwave today - it's supposed to get to 60 degrees.

Stay tuned - I'm sure this will change.

Something You Don't See Every Day

I ran to Wal-Mart this afternoon to get a big bag of bird seed, and during my ten minutes in and out of the store, I saw not one, not two, but three families that had bought fishing rods and reels.  Each of the three fathers were carrying multiple rods and reels - so I guess they were getting them for the whole family.  After seeing the second family with the rods and reels, I wanted to go ask them where they were going to fish.

Flashback Friday

Back in the day, on the Friday before Thunder Over Louisville, I would be anxious and nerved up about going downtown for the "world's largest fireworks display."  I would go over my list of food, drinks, and everything else I wanted to pack up in the Blazer for the day.  I would be nerved up about where to park and get our canopy set up, and even more nerved up about the traffic nightmare getting back home.  Gone are those days of stressing out.  I think it's been 10-15 years since I went to Thunder.  And I don't miss it one bit.

Soak Up The Sun

When I went to the dermatologist on Monday, he gave me another coritisone shot for the itching, and he told me about an old school remedy to try.  He told me to get some tar lotion, and put it on my shoulders and neck where I have the eczema spots, and sit out in the sun for 20 minutes.  Ordinarily I would have been hesitant to try, but I remember that way back in the day at the Waverly Hills Sanitarium, they would put the tuberculosis patients outside during the day to soak up the sun to help.  And it worked.  So for the past two days, I've sat out by the chicken coop in a cut-up t-shirt to soak up the sun.  I know it's too early to tell a difference, but I do know that thanks to the cortisone shot and the sun, my itching has eased up the past two days.

As long as it is warm enough, I will continue to put on the tar lotion and sit out and soak up the sun.

Stay tuned.

You Had One Job To Do

On Saturday night, I refilled my anti-itch meds at WalGreens.  I waited and waited and didn't hear anything from them.  I had to pick up some prescriptions for the Old Man yesterday, so I asked.  They apologized and said it "fell through the cracks."  Fast forward to today.  I stopped on my way home from my Bible study and gave them my info at the drive-thru, picked up the bag and headed home.  It was at home when I opened it and discovered they gave me another prescription for the Old Man.  I called them, visibly and audibly irritated.  So I ran back up there and got the stuff.  Only instead of a bottle of 60 like the prescription calls for, they gave me a blister pack of 24.  I take 2 a day so that will do me for less than two weeks.  I was hacked off and just came on home, where I spent 20 minutes opening all of the blister packs and put them in an old pill bottle.

They had one job to do and damned if they didn't do it.

Update From The Compound

I am happy to report that the carport roof is still in tact after two days of wind here in the 'Ville.  For that, we are thankful.

And I am even happier to report that last night was the first night in a month that I wasn't itching.  For that, I am thankful to my dermatologist who gave me another cortisone shot yesterday.

As always, stay tuned.

Another Dark Day In Louisville

Unfortunately, today is another dark day in Louisville.  Yesterday, there were a total of four people shot to death in two separate shootings.  Another murder was discovered yesterday morning when police found a man that had died from being beaten to death.  Today isn't starting out much better - another person was shot to death in the Highlands.

There are no words.

Another Spring Update From The Ohio Valley

Everything outside is covered in a sick green color -- all of the pollen/whatever crap it is in the air right now.  I'm over it.  After living here in the Ohio Valley all of my life and dealing with seasonal allergies for a lot of those years, you'd think I'd be used to it by now.

Hello Sweet Springtime

Spring is in full force here in the Ohio Valley, and along with it is the allergy season starting way too early.  I was out on the back porch reading and after a half an hour came back inside so I would quit sneezing.  And that is with me taking my Claritin every day.

Oh well.  It could be much worse.

Healing Has Begun

As of right now, over 25 churches in Louisville are having special services tonight for people to join together to remember the victims of Monday's shootings and pray for healing for those still receiving medical treatment.

I think I am going to go with a friend who is going to take her therapy dog.  It's Hug Wednesday, too - so I will be more than happy to give out hugs.

Still A Dark Day In Louisville

The sun was out today and there wasn't a cloud in the sky but it is still a dark day in Louisville.  Another shooting victim died this morning, bringing the total to six of our hometown folks killed in the two shootings yesterday.

There are no words.

A Dark Day In Louisville

Unfortunately, Louisville is in the news today for something other than the Derby.  This morning, there was a mass shooting downtown next to Slugger Field - 5 people were killed, 6 are in the hospital with injuries, and the shooter is dead.  Less than a mile from that site, there was another shooting at Jefferson Community College - 1 dead and 1 injured, with the shooter escaping.

I  had to go downtown this morning to the church to sign something, and believe me when I tell you I did not tary long downtown.  The church is nowhere near those two shooting sites but still.

Now we will be bombarded on FB with the "thoughts and prayers" posts.  That is well and good, but there needs to be a change.

Happy Easter

My Easter is not complete until I have heard Miss Dolly Parton sing "He's Alive."

So Much For Spring

After Wednesday afternoon's storms rolled through, we went from the low 80s on Tuesday and Wednesday, to the 40's ever since.  I hope all of the kids are bundled up today for their Easter egg hunts.

We Dodged Another Bullet

Wicked storms and tornadoes moved through Louisville late yesterday afternoon, but here at The Compound, we dodged another bullet.  And I'm happy to report the carport roof is fine.

A tornado was confirmed about 4 miles from The Compound - lots of trees down, and it tore the roof off of a pretty big apartment complex.

The Old Man has always said that The Compound is in a little pocket right by the river and that has protected us.  I believe he is right.

The Black Cloud Is Still Hanging Over Us

We found out yesterday that two of our favorite little old ladies from church are in the hospital with pneumonia. Both of these dear ladies got out of the hospital late last week - one had been in there for over two weeks with a break in her back, and the other had been there for lower digestive problems.  Now both are back in the hospital with pneumonia.

I'm hoping the storms and rain tonight will blow that black cloud out of here.

Happy Monday

Yesterday was a strange day for me, Faithful Readers.  In fact, the past week had been strange.  I hadn't been sleeping well night after night.  I was wide awake at about 3:00 Sunday morning.  I thought about getting up and getting in my recliner but just sat up in bed and prayed.  I prayed for about an hour - for me, the Old Man, and a lot of friends and family.

It didn't take long for the Lord to answer a prayer for me.  In a few hours, I had my answer.  And got another answer to another prayer this morning.

So now you see why this is a happy Monday.

No April Fools

Yet AGAIN, we had more bad storms and lots and lots of rain and unfortunately wind.  The storm went through the 'Ville from about 1:00 this morning until after 3:00.  I was dreading getting up this morning to see how bad the carport roof was damaged this time, but imagine my surprise when I saw the roofing was still there - and better yet, was still attacked to the roof!  That is no April Fools!
