Heatwave 2012: Day 4

I gave incorrect informat in yesterday's post, faithful readers.  It got up to 105 yesterday.  The Trane was running once again at full capacity and kept us fairly comfortable last night.  I kicked my ceiling fan on high and that did the trick for me.  The house was a bit warmer last night after the 'Rents had the kitchen heated up from canning 14 more quarts of beans, but there will be no canning or cooking today so we'll see if that helps.  Today's forecasted high is supposed to be 104.  All regularly scheduled activities at The Compound have been cancelled and we're staying inside today.  I'll keep you posted.

Flashback Friday

We're in the middle of a major record-breaking heatwave right now.  As I type this, it is 104 here in the 'Ville.  But I digress.  I'm trying to remember when I felt this hot or hotter, and nothing is coming to mind.  Not even the time when I was in Vegas at the end of July and as I stood on a corner waiting to cross the street and it felit like I was in the line of fire from a blowdryer. And not even when I was there in May and it was 110 and as we were walking to Luxor  and it felt as hot as if we were walking through damned Egypt. Sorry but I can't remember it feeling any hotter than it did today on my way home from work.

Household Tip Of The Day

First of all, let me apologize for not posting yesterday.  There was a whirlwind of activity from dawn till way after dusk.  I had to pick up someone from the airport and their flight was over a half hour late, and by the time I got home from that trip, I was just spent and went on to bed. But I digress.

I've used the same plastic glass for my morning coffee commute for probably 30 years now.  Yes, the glass is very stained but I wash it everyday and I don't worry about it.

I read something today that might be of interest to those that want to get rid of coffee stains in cups, mugs, and other containers.

Do you have a cup or travel mug that has been stained by your favorite warm beverage? Grind up some eggshells and drop them in the drinkware filled with warm water. Let it sit over night, and the egg shell will absorb the stain.

I've not used this yet, but when I do, I will report back my findings.

Heatwave: 2012 Day 1

The weatherazzi has everybody all geared up for the big big heat wave that starts tomorrow.  Today, the temps were in the mid 90's, but tomorrow the high is expected to be 104.  And they are calling for temps over 100 for the next 4 or 5 days.  Blech is all I have to say about that.

I've already made my executive decision, and with as much as I love my Bats, I don't think I'll be attending the game Saturday evening with temps forecasted over 100.  I'll stay inside and gladly watch reruns or play on the computer in the cool air conditioned comfort of our home.

If you're out and about tomorrow or the next few days, please, please, please be careful.  Drink extra water, and stay inside in the a/c if it is at all possible.

Farmtown 2012

I'm proud to report that the 'Rents had the first picking of green beans yesterday, and yesterday evening they canned 14 quarts of beans.  The count is in.  I'm not sure that we'll be able to break the record of 56 quarts of beans from 2011 but we will sure try.

Aren't these pretty?

And FYI, we're picking out one of the prettiest quarts and I'm entering it in the Kentucky State Fair.

In The Good Old Summertime

Summer officially started last Wednesday and boy did it start.  We've been in the 90's ever since.  They're calling for "cool" temps tomorrow and Wednesday with highs only in the mid 80's but Thursday through the start of next week they're forecasting highs of 100 or more.  Yep, summer is here.

Link Of The Week

There's been some talk in the news lately about how there have been a lot of UFO sightings recently. I've never personally seen what would classify as a UFO, but my Dad and Grandpa both saw something back in the late 70's that you could call a UFO.  Grandpa was a big joker and prankster, and if he'd said he'd seen a UFO, you would have thought he was just pranking you.  But Dad was with him and and saw it, too, and backed up his story.

But I digress.  If you're interested in recent UFO sightings, I've got a link for you.  Visit http://www.nuforc.org/webreports.html and you can find out if there were any UFO sightings reported in your area.  You can search by state, date, or shape of UFO.

Farewell, Aunt Helen

I'm sad to tell you, faithful readers, that my favorite Aunt and my Dad's only sibling Helen died this week. She died Wednesday morning, and it's taken me a few days to think about how I would like to pay tribute to her.

Unpleasantries first. She had fallen almost two months ago, and had broken 3 vertebrae and had basically not movement in her arms and legs since then. Plus she'd been on a ventilator the whole time. For the last two weeks there had been no response and no brain activity. On Monday, she flatlined and was gone for over two minutes, but her heart started back on its own and her heartrate was in the 20's. So later that day, my cousin made the decision to not prolong the inevitable, and on Tuesday the ventilator tube was taken out. But Aunt Helen was tough like her parents and brother, and she lasted until Wednesday morning. She was 85 years old.

Aunt Helen loved to rollerskate when she was a kid and teenager, and it was at the skating rink where she met my uncle. They married, and my aunt got a job as a bookkeeper for a furniture store, and then later on was the first person hired at the first Dodge car dealership in Louisville. I thought that was pretty cool. My uncle was transferred to California with his job and they moved from Louisville. They moved back to Louisville in the early 90's after my uncle retired. They stayed here until shortly after Grandma died, and as my uncle's health was starting to deteriorate they moved back to California.

Aunt Helen inherited the love of making things from Grandma. She loved to crochet, knit, and cross stitch, and was a faithful patron of the ceramics shop, where she made some beautiful pieces that proudly sit on bookshelves and in cabinets here at The Compound. She was also a great cook - another thing she inherited from Grandma. If I had to pick one thing she made that was my favorite, it would be her corn pudding.

Some fun memories I have of spending time with Aunt Helen are when she and I went to the movies to see "The Beverly Hillbillies" movie back in the early 90's. We both laugh till we cried at the scene where Granny is sitting in her rocking chair on the old truck and they hit a wire or something and Granny and the rocking chair were flipped off. She and I also shared a love of country music, and I remember what a great time she had when I took her to see the Statler Brothers in concert.

She and my Uncle Roy loved to play cribbage, and they would play a few games every night after supper. I wouldn't be surprised if my uncle didn't meet her the other side of the Pearly Gates in heaven with the cribbage board.

Flashback Friday

I apologize for letting other things get in the way, and I've been remiss in having guest writers.  But not today.  Today's Flashback Friday is brought to us by my friend, coworker and faithful reader JMc.  This was brought about by a conversation in the lunchroom this week.  Thanks for being such a faithful reader, JMc.  You rock.

Remember back in the day when there was no texting, no cell phones, no CD or DVD players with screens in the headrest, no seat belt laws, no Heavy Hitter commercials, people weren’t shocked to death about a person coming home from work with a nice, cold beer in their hand and driving, WAKY was on the am and the majority of the cars were not hatchbacks and SUV didn’t have a definition?

We had cars and some cars at that time had a huge space under the rear window called a “Package Tray”. Yep, that’s the official name of it unless you were a small child then it was the “lay down rear viewing area.” If you had a parent that didn’t mind,  it was another way to view the world going by on the road.

This huge space offered another play area with Hot Wheels, Barbie dolls and a just a typical catch all. I’ve seen fishing poles in some vehicles, magazines and newspapers to name a few articles that have found residence time on these roving shelves of wonder.

Then in the teenage years it was a place to have some screaming 6 x 9’s blowing out the windows with the new stereo system and always have the manufacturer’s name on them bad boys to show people that you forked out some change for your tunes. Of course the rear passengers would be temporarily deaf from the cruising that night of listening to Styx, Led, REO, Van Halen and don’t forget Boston.

Those days of freedom in the cars are now all but forgotten due to the man, holding us down on choices with seat belts on or ticket. At least no one dies in car crashes anymore, right? Don’t hate here just joking.

So, there you go. Another history lesson about “Back in the day”.

I'm proud to say that I remember many times laying in the Package Tray of our big old Chevy Impala.  I don't remember playing with any toys back there; I just remember laying up there.  In fact, when we would take road trips (re: any trip longer than 20 minutes from our home in PRP) that's where I would be.  Grandma and Grandpa would usually be in the back seat, so they would be able to catch me if Dad had to make a sudden break.  But I had my own little pillow in that area, and would just lay down and crash while we went somewhere.

"Wicked", Here I Come!

The much-acclaimed Broadway musical "Wicked" is coming back to Louisville in September for a three-week run.  And to get everyone ready for it, I think I might be auditioning for a roll as one of the Wicked Witches.  Or so the guys that work for me might think.  In my year and a half of being a supervisor, I had a first time experience this morning with my department when I had to walk over and tell them to please stop the 20 minute story that one of the guys was telling.  And it wasn't easy for me to do.

I've been listening and kept hoping that he would wrap up his story soon but it didn't happen.  I got two emails from coworkers, both of them supervisors, complaining about the loud incessant talking.  So I knew I had to do something.  I didn't raise my voice, and I didn't use a stern tone of voice, but still I became the Wicked Witch Of Zoeller. Until now, the only "bad" things I've had to do was go over and run off visitors, aka campers, from other departments that like to camp out in the cubicle and tell stories.  When they've overstayed their welcome, I normally just have to walk over and point towad the door, and the campers get the hint and leave.  But today, there were no campers and it was all my department.  Oh well.  I'm sure they'll get over it soon.

Happy Belated Birthday, Ann Wilson

TWIT and I would like to wish a very happy belated birthday to one of my all-time favorite female vocalists (and probably all-time all-time vocalists regardless of gender) to Ann Wilson of my all-time favorite group Heart.  Ann turned 62 yesterday.

For the record let me say that Ann sounds just as good, if not better, as she did the first time I had the honor of seeing her in concert back in the day in July of 1976 at one of the California Jam concerts.  She blew me away then, and now over thirty years later her voice is as clear and strong, maybe even stronger, then when they first came on the scene.

To me, Ann has without a doubt the best voice in rock and roll, and I hope she is ok with me saying that she ranks a close second to the voice of Patsy Cline when it comes to female singers.  Loving them both like I do, I would pay good money to hear Ann sing "I Fall To Pieces."

Happy belated birthday, Ann.  You still rock. Nobody can hold a candle to you.

Answer Of The Day

Five minutes after I posted the Question Of The Day yesterday evening, I found the missing items. All I had to do was focus. In my defense, I will admit that I was very distracted and side-tracked, so that's why I couldn't focus on where the things were.  All is well.  Until the next time I lose something, that is.

Question Of The Day

How do you lose a package you received in the mail two days ago? Does anyone have any answers?  If so, I'd sure like to hear them.

Link Of The Week

Luckily for me, friends and relatives rarely give me a gift card. When they do give me one, it ends up being for a store that is a half an hour away from The Compound. I know I'm making it sound like that is a full day trip to go shopping, but it's inconvenient for me. I luckily made it through Christmas without getting any gift cards, but got one for my birthday.  And yes, it's to a store that is over a half hour away.  And it's for a store that I just don't like.

I'd forgotten about this card until one day last week when I saw a link for a website that will buy back your gift cards.  Not at face value, of course, but on the average for about 75% of the value, depending on the store. When you sell the cards you can get the money in the form of an old school check, or get it deposited to your Pay Pal account, or heaven forbid, in the form of an Amazon gift card.  (Note:  a gift card for Amazon would be in the #1 spot on my list of Gift Cards Puddin Would Love).  You can also buy gift cards at a big discount, too.  Visit http://www.plasticjungle.com/ and buy or sell gift cards.

Play Ball!

It's Saturday and that means another weekend of Bats baseball.  But this weekend isn't just part of an ordinary homestand; Cincinnatti Reds star Scott Rollen is playing with the Bats this weekend as part of his rehab for a shoulder injury.  Rollen just happens to be The Old Man's favorite Reds player, so I'm making it my mission to get to the ballfield early this afternoon and with I'm sure dozens of others to hopefully get his autograph on a baseball that I can give to Dad tomorrow for Father's Day. I stopped at WalMart this morning and bought a few baseballs and a new blue Sharpie and put those in my game bag so I'm ready for action. As always, I'll keep you posted.

Flashback Friday

It's almost the middle of June here in the 'Ville, and that means we're deep into the Catholic church picnic season.  Starting the last weekend in May and going until September, there are Catholic church picnics every weekend.  And when I say "picnic" I mean the usual Catholic picnic:  fried chicken dinners, beer, and gambling booths.

When I was a kid, we loved the Catholic church picnic season because that meant extra money;  we would visit every picnic on Friday and Saturday nights and pick up the aluminum beer cans and then on Monday, we'd take them to the recycling center truck that would be in the parking lot of the shopping center to get some cash.

There is a certain beer smell associated with those picnics that to this day I haven't been able to replicate.  It's all because of the beer cans. As we were just kids picking up the empty beer cans with our bare hands and putting them in the big garbage bags, there was a certain smell of beer that I have to admit smelled good.  It was almost a sweet smell, and as I said, to this day I've never been able to get that smell.

We weren't afraid at those picnics; our family friends Dot and Bob would pick me up at about 7:30 on Friday and Saturday nights, and me and their sons Mark and Todd would scour the local church's picnic grounds and fill up the back of Dot and Bob's station wagon with bags of empty beer cans.  But we were enterprising even at a young age; before putting the cans into our bags, we would stomp them so we could get more cans into one bag.

We never made big big money from this endeavor, but we sure had a lot of fun doing it. I shudder today to think that not many young kids or teenagers would go to such lengths to make a few bucks.

A Lesson Learned

I learned a very valuable lesson from the 'Rents tonight. I had to learn to forgive and then let go.  It's easier said than done.  They had to remind me that I was harboring some bad feelings for something that this person did not do to me directly; I was merely a bystander and an observer.  So I took a few minutes and thought about things, and then I just let it all go. I feel much better now; I feel as though a bit weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

I'm Not Sure What To Say

After work today, I went a half mile down the street from our office to see the new grocery store that opened this morning.  It was in the newspaper and on all of the local TV channels because it was a grocery store in the 'hood.  Everyone was thrilled that a grocery store had been built in this barren land, and people in the area have the opportunity to buy as many fresh fruits and vegetables as they want. It was a very cool grocery store.  I didn't feel afraid, even though I'm admitting I was packing while I was in there, but then again since I have my conceal carry license, I pack just about everywhere I go.  So that having been said, I didn't feel "afraid" while I was in the parking lot or in the store, just because I was in an area that is considered the 'hood.

I'm thrilled for those that will be able to shop there - they produce section of the store was awesome, and I can't wait to go back at lunch time and get something from the deli.  I'm happy that people in that area have a nice big grocery store where they can shop.

At the same time I was visiting the store, less than a mile away, there was an accident involving a motorist and a van full of daycare kids. As of the 6:00 news report, two of the kids on the van had been killed.

As the title says, I'm not sure what to say.  While the neighborhood was hopefully happy about a new grocery store opening, others in the same neighborhood were angry and hurt that two precious children were killed in their area.

It's just like JFK said; life is not fair.

Bonus Link Of The Week

I've always been a big Saturday Night Live fan, and in recent years, some of my favorites have been Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph.  This past Saturday night, SNL showed and "encore" (rerun) of an episode that aired around Valentine's Day this year.  Maya Rudolph was the host, and I have to say it was one of the funniest episodes of SNL that I've watched in a few years.  The funniest part was a sketch where Maya Rudolph played Beyonce.  Please take a few minutes to watch the sketch here at http://www.gossipcop.com/beyonce-baby-snl-sketch-video-baby-blue-visitors-jay-z-prince-justin-timberlake/.  And as always, if you want to watch the full episode, which I urge you to do, you can watch it at http://www.hulu.com/

Link Of The Week

We all know by now that I don't cook, but I do have some knowledge of cooking, baking and grilling.  And I have been known to bake a cake and fix a dinner of homemade marinara sauce and stuffed pasta shells.  But one thing that just scares me is grilling.  I give major props to anyone that grills steaks and other meats.

If any of you are intimidated by grilling beef or any other meat like I am, I found a site this week that can help.  Visit http://www.chathamjournal.com/weekly/living/food/how-to-grill-steak-50622.shtml and you'll be on your way to grilling the perfect steak.

Part Of This Thing Called Life

As soon as I post this entry, I have take a shower and get dressed to attend another funeral.  This will be the fourth furneral I've attended in three weeks.  I really don't like the pattern here.  But as the label of this post says, it's all part of this thing called life.

Today, I go and pay my respects and say farewell to an old friend from our old church, Pat.  She lived about a mile up the street, and was also my 4H leader.  They had a swimming pool, and during summer vacation, once a week I'd ride my bike up to their house and spend the day.

Pat started attending a different church, but we would still see here every now and then at the grocery store or a restaurant or local festival. Then her health started to decline and cancer took over.  But I know she's reunited up in heaven with her husband Tom and her mother Helen.

Farewell, Pat. Thank you for the years that you dedicated to a bunch of young 4H girls.

New Product Review

When I saw a new variety of Doritos in the store on Tuesday, I knew I had to give them a try. They're called "Dinamita" - little rolled up Doritos. Since it's a type of Doritos, I just knew that they would be awesome. I grabbed a bag of the "Nacho Picoso" flavor (translated" spicy nacho) and was anxiously waiting for lunchtime to try them.

Like I said, they're little rolled up Doritos, about the diameter of a drinking straw and about 3 inches or so long. At first glance, I thought how awesome they would be dipping them into some nacho cheese. After one bite I knew that was not going to happen. After just one bite, they left a horrible aftertaste in my mouth and throat. It's not that they were all that hot; they just have a very bizarre taste. At first glance you're expecting them to taste just like nacho Doritos but don't be fooled. I ate a few more just to be fair and unbiased for my review and one thing I noticed was that they leave a very heavy cheese dust layer on your fingers - way more than regular nacho Doritos.   And after just eating a few of these, I had indigestion the rest of the day.  Blech.

I let a couple of coworkers try them and they, too, were not impressed. Unfortunately, Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso flavor receives an official Thumbs Down from TWIT.

Puddin Trivia

I've shared this piece of trivia about yours truly way back in the day when I first started this blog, but I think it's pretty darned cool, so I'm sharing it again so any new faithful readers can get hip.

Today is June 6, and it's a pretty eventful day in my life.  Three women who each were my boss at one time during my career all have birthdays today. To JTB, KK, and BP: I wish each of you a very happy birthday, and I thank you each for things that you taught me while I was working for you.  Each of you have made an impression in my life, and I thank you for being mentors.

Chalk Up Another One For The Old Man

The Old Man has always been a very accurate shot with a handgun and a rifle.  And now we can add to that list a shotgun.  In the past two days he's managed to get two rabbits and one groundhog that had been terrorizing The Compound.  I'm sorry of this offends some of my readers, but we are overun with rabbits, squirrels and groundhogs right now at The Compound.  And they're very brazen.  One of the bigger groundhogs likes to walk up under the carport around the BMW.  And one even got into a skirmish with The Compound's favorite canine Rocky Dog a few weeks ago.  So The Old Man and our neighbor PS have taken it upon themselves to rid The Compound of these pesky varmints.

As the summer goes on, I'll be adding to the total. I'll keep you posted.

Overheard At The Store

And I quote, "Well shit. You know I ain't never calling her no more."

Nuff said.

Happy National Cheese Day

TWIT would like to wish everyone a very happy National Cheese Day.  If you haven't eaten any cheese today, there's still time to get some cheese with your supper or nighttime snack.

I had some cubes of my favorite cheese, Co-Jack, this morning with my V8 juice.  Please eat some of your favorite cheese tonight in honor of National Cheese Day.

It Was The Third Of June . .

This is one of my favorite days of the year.  Why, you ask?  Because today is mentioned in one of my favorite country songs, "Ode To Billy Joe" by Bobby Gentry

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And Papa said to Mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas
"Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please"
"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow"
And Mama said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And Brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece of apple pie, you know it don't seem right"
"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

And Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe
And Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round, Papa caught it and he died last Spring
And now Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Link Of The Week

I know I'm a day early, but the Link of the Week is very important, and is time sensitive.

For those of you in the Louisville area that have Insight as their cable provider, you know by now that they have dropped the WDRB Fox 41 channel from their line-up due to a big drama going on between Fox and Time Warner (who now owns Insight).  So as of right now, you can't watch Glee, American Idol, Major League Baseball, NFL, NASCAR and anything else you used to watch on Fox 41.  People are fired up and are calling, writing and emailing to complain.  Here's a link from the WDRB site that explains the drama, and the page also has links where you can go to complain. If you think people are fired up now, imagine how they would have been two weeks ago if this had happened before the finals of American Idol.  Talk about rioting in the streets; it would have been worse than it was in Lexington when UK won the NCAA championship.  But I digress.  Go to http://www.wdrb.com/story/18657185/faq-what?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter and then click on one of the links to voice your opinion.

As for me and my house, we're going to wait a few days to see if they reach an agreement.  If not, I'll simply go buy an antenna and hook it up and then we can watch our favorite Fox shows on the big TV.

As always, I'll keep you posted.

Flashback Friday

TWIT is proud to wish everyone a very Happy National Doughnut Day.  If you haven't had the chance to get a doughnut today, we encourage you to go to Krispy Kreme over on Bardstown Road, or to any Speedway or Krogers grocery store and get a dozen.

When I think of Doughnut Day, I reminisce to back in the day when doughnuts were special and were a treat; we didn't take them for granted like we do today.  On my 15 minute trip to work, I could stop at any of 5 different stores or shops and buy Krispy Kremes.  But believe me when I tell you that they would not taste the same as they do when they come from the actual Krispy Kreme stores.

When I was a kid, going to the Krispy Kreme store 20 minutes away was a big deal.  It might as well have been half-way across the state to a kid.  We only went to the Krispy Kreme store for special occasions.  And like I said, today, people take them for granted. But not me.

I remember what an ordeal it was when we got Krispy Kreme doughnuts;  it was a mini-road trip.  But it was worth it.

Today, most kids are clueless when you say the words "Krispy Kreme."  That makes me sad.
