A Busy Saturday

I've been on the go since I got up this morning. And it's 7:00 at night as I type this.  I'm ready to kick my New Balance tennis shoes off and crash on the bed for a while.

But it was a great Saturday.  The Old Man has had great improvement in the past few weeks -- he has been getting around without his walker, and for that we have praised the Lord for answering our prayers.  And we will continue to keep the prayers going for continued improvement.

TWIT and I would like to wish everyone a happy long weekend.

I hope that you have a great, relaxing, drama-free long weekend.  That is what I am hoping for.

Water Fountain Wednesday

I realize it's Thursday, but it's my blog and I can write whatever I want.

Today we start a recurring post titled Water Fountain Wednesday.  Two weeks ago, we got a very cool new water fountain at work.  It dispenses filtered water, and has a sensor that detects when you put your glass or water bottle by the nozzle.  It also has a counter and keeps track of how many plastic water bottles have been saved by getting the filtered water from this drinking fountain.  As of yesterday afternoon:

Bottles saved - 283

Ohio Valley Weather Update

This is news worthy - we got some more rain today, and it was much needed.  And we are thankful to be out of the 90 degree days for awhile.  Nuff said.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

The high today was 72, and we had a good soft steady rain most of the day, which was much needed.

As far as the weatherazzi are predicting, I don't see any 90 degrees days in the next week, thank goodness.

Stay tuned.

Ohio Valley Weather Update

On Monday, it was the hottest day of the year so far - 98 degrees.  Yesterday, the high was 70.  As I type this post, it's currently 63 at The Compound.  Who knows that the weather will do next.

Stay tuned.

So Happy It's Thursday

Even though I was off Monday, it's been a long week.  For that, I am So Happy It's Thursday.

Trying New Things

I am very happy to report that The Old Man fixed an awesome new dish for supper tonight -- and I tried quinoa for the first time.  And it wasn't that bad.

We had a package in the pantry where all you needed to add was some veggies and chicken, and the Old Man found it and decided to fix it tonight.  He followed the directions and added a green bell pepper, a red bell pepper, a can of corn, and a pound of slicked chicken breasts with the package and it was pretty darned good.

I will say I am not a huge fan of quinoa, but I would definitely eat this dish again.

Way to go, Old Man.  You rock.

The Hottest Day Of The Year Update

Before I left work this afternoon, I checked my trusty Dark Sky weather app.  It said it was 99 degrees at the Zoeller Company.  That made me feel extra hot.

Then on the way home, I drove into a big windstorm.  You couldn't see a quarter mile ahead of you for all of the dust and debris in the air.  My Ranger was truly rocking from the wind.  It was one of the craziest things I've ever driven in.

I sure was glad when I pulled into The Compound and ran into the house before the rain started. When I got inside, I checked Dark Sky and the temp was 80 degrees.  That's quite a drop with the front moving through.  We'll sure take it.

The Hottest Day Of The Year

Today was the hottest day of the year, and I am very, very thankful to Prudential Heating and Air Conditioning for installing the most awesome air conditioner two summers ago.  We could not be more pleased.  The new unit has greatly reduced our LG&E bill in the summer months.  We are cool and comfortable - that's all you can ask for.

Thanks again, Prudential.  You all rock.

I Need A Calmative

It was a very nerve wracking night at Slugger Field watching my beloved Bats.  We won in extra innings 2-1, thank goodness.  But the game was, as I said, nerve wracking.  There was a huge group in our section, and they were there to just socialize, and socialize loudly they did.  One family in particular was on our nerves.  They had four kids - a baby that the mother had in a backpack-like contraption strapped to her front, a girl that was maybe 6 or 7, and two boys, maybe 6 or 7 and an older one, maybe 10.  The girl ran up and down the aisle steps at least 87 times tonight.  And her mother toting the baby wasn't far behind.  And when the mother would go up or down the aisle steps, she'd always stop at the row in front of us and socialize, obstructing our view of what was going on out on the ball field.  They left the game at about 8:30, so we had an hour of peace.  But I sure would have taken a Xanax during the game if someone had given me one.

Thank You, Denise

I would like to publicly thank my hair stylist Denise for giving me the most awesome cut today.  She's been cutting my hair for about 35 years.  In fact, she is the only person that has cut my hair in the past 35 years.  But I digress.

Today, she gave me a slight variation on my usual cut and I couldn't be happier.

I've said it before and I will say it again.  If I ever win the lottery, the first thing I will do is give Denise a pile of cash and keep her on retainer to cut my hair.  Nuff said.

Back To School

Jefferson County Public School was back in session today.  And I am very happy with the traffic today.

I left the house later than normal this morning, and there were no delays going to work.  Score.

I left work right at 4:30 today, and even after stopping at the liquor store for some wine, it was an easy ride home.

I can only hope the rest of the school year will be this easy.  Stay tuned.

Thank You, Lord

I want to publicly thank the Lord for answering a big prayer this afternoon.  It was a pretty big one.  And all of the thanks, praise and glory goes up to Him.

A Great Supper Was Had By All

We had awesome bacon and tomato sandwiches for supper tonight.  The tomatoes were courtesy of our awesome friend Tom at church, and the thick sliced bacon was fried to perfection by the Old Man.

We also had some awesome fried apples.

We all three ate like little piggies.  And a good time was had by all.

Turnabout

Until last year, for as long as I can remember my family has raised a garden.  And a pretty big garden at that.  We canned and froze vegetables, and gave a way a lot to friends.   In the summer, we'd take bags full of tomatoes to church every Sunday to give away.

Last year we tried (key word) to raise a few tomato plants in pots but that was a bust.  I think we might have gotten four tennis ball sized tomatoes and that was all she wrote.  This year, we didn't even try that. So I've bought tomatoes for us at the grocery.

But for the past month, a sweet man at church has been giving us tomatoes every week.  He has been bumped to the top of our egg list, too, in return.

It's nice to see that someone is keeping the tradition of giving away your extra tomatoes.  I know we are sure happy!

New Product Review

For about a month, Krispy Kreme has been teasing everyone about the upcoming Reese Cup filled donuts.  I love Krispy Kreme donuts, and I love Reese Cups, so what was there not to love about the Reese Cup filled Krispy Kreme?  A lot.

I tried one the day they were introduced and I was not impressed.  The donut itself was a cake donut - not the awesome glazed donut that I was expecting.  For me, that was what turned me off.  I chose the chocolate lover's version, pictured on the left.  The peanut butter filling was good - not Reese Cup filling, but a good peanut butter filling.  But it just didn't do anything for me.  I'm sorry to say I won't try another.

And I am sorry to say that the Krispy Kreme Reese Cup filled donuts do not get any thumbs up from TWIT.

So Happy It's Friday

I am so happy it's Friday - because that means I don't have to get up and go to work for the next two days.  That's about all I got today.  Maybe I'll have more tomorrow.

So Happy It's Thursday

I apologize for not posting yesterday.  Old Arthur was visiting me and my foot was giving me fits.

But I'm happy to report that my foot is feeling much better today, thank goodness.

And I have more good news - the old Blazer will get be getting a new transmission this weekend.  So hopefully she will be road-worthy to drive to work Monday morning.  I can't thank my former neighbor Toddy for doing the work.  He's a saint.

As always, stay tuned.

Let It Rain

I thought I would never say this, with as much rain as we got the first six months of this year, but there is a slight chance of rain tonight, and I hope we get it.  The grass here at The Compound is almost brown.  We don't want a deluge - just an hour or two of some steady soaking rain to keep everyone's crops and plants watered.  That's not too much to ask.

My Opinion

I spent some time yesterday afternoon researching online, and to make the long story short, I came up with varying definitions of a "mass shooting." Some sites said that a "mass shooting" was more than 4 people killed. To me, it should be more than one. Also, people are posting that this morning's mass shooting was the 250th mass shooting in the U.S. this year. I haven't had time to research that one, but in my opinion, more than one is way too many.
What can we do to stop this? I really don't know. But I have my opinion. Immediately following a mass shooting we see tons of FB posts saying "our thoughts and prayers are with ____ fill in the blank for the shooting site of the day. Yes, we need to pray for all of the families that are affected. But there's more that we can do.
The first thing that I tell churches that seek my help with security is "if you see something, say something." Surely, the shooters in the alleged 250 mass shootings this year have left some kind of trail - if their friends and family had suspected some odd behavior, they should have said something. And if they did say something and the people they told didn't do anything, well, that's on them.
I'm not jumping on the gun law bandwagon. I am sticking closer to home on this and will continue to urge people if you see something, say something. It just might make a difference.

Not One Of Our Smartest Ideas

This is on us.  This morning, me, my Sweet Mother, and the Old Man went out to the garage and cleaned and cleared out the freezer.  I admit - two weeks ago, I put some ice cream in the freezer and didn't close the door all the way.  Later that day, I discovered my error.  So the majority of the food in there needed to go.  We procrastinated until today.  We spent an hour throwing away and cleaning the inside of the freezer, and with the items that we deemed OK, they only filled up maybe a third of the space.

But this leaves us with a big problem: the garbage can that is half-way full of food.  And our garbage doesn't get picked up until Thursday morning.  Now you see why this wasn't one of our smartest ideas.

To keep the probably smell away from us, we left the garbage can out by the garage, and tonight I got some rope and tied the lid down do no varmints can get into it and make things worse.

Stay tuned.  I have a feeling there is more of this story to come.

Flashback Friday

Way, way back in the day in the late 80's when I was working for National Processing Company, I would use a green Bolero glass just like in this picture for my travel mug.  I didn't like other travel mugs - I liked this green glass. So I used it.

Then when I moved on to my gig at Zoeller Company, I continued to use the green Bolero glass for my travel mug.  It was just the right size, and I never spilled it.

Flash forward to today.  I still use that same green Bolero glass as my morning coffee travel mug.  And I will probably use it as long as I live.  Nuff said.

Thursday, Thursday

Thank you, Lord - the 'Rents had another good day here at The Compound.  And I had a pretty good day at work.

We had an awesome supper, and now we are chilling and waiting for Happy Hour to start.  You can't ask for much more than that.
