Happy Anniversary to the 'Rents

TWIT and I would like to wish a very, very happy 60th anniversary to my sweet parents aka the 'Rents.

We've been celebrating all week, and still have more celebrating to do.  And if being married to the same person for 60 years isn't worth a lot of celebrating, I don't know what is.

The other day, someone asked my Dad what the "secret" was to their long marriage.  Without hesitation, my Dad said "We've never gone to bed mad at each other."  And it sure has worked.

A Great Day At The Races

The 'Rents, me, and my Favorite Cousin and her Sweet Husband went to the track today on the hottest day of the year so far.  And a good time was had by all.

I guess I was the big winner - I came out with $50 more than I came in with, and the Old Man came out with about $25 more.  My Sweet Mother even came out $5.80 ahead.   But the best part of all was the fact that we got to spend a day together with family.  You can't put a winning amount on that.

Another Update From The Compound

After the Old Man and my visiting Favorite Cousin carefully examined the Mysterious White Chicken, we all quickly realized that it is not a rooster, but in fact is a young hen.  That makes a whole lot of difference.

She's still hanging around, and she spends the night on top of the chicken coop.

Stay tuned.

Another Update From The Compound

The Mysterious White Chicken was back again this morning when I went to let the Girls out.  In fact, it never left.  It spent the night on top of the coop.

Stay tuned.

Update From The Compound

The mysterious white chicken was still here today.  It was out this morning when I let the girls out, and the 'Rents said it was out by the coop all day long.  And as I type this, it is still out by the coop.  Stay tuned.

The Girls Have a Suiter

The Girls have a new friend.  A rooster from the neighborhood made his way to The Compound yesterday afternoon and is infatuated with The Girls.  They didn't seem to pay him much attention, which made him strut around even more.

Stay tuned.  I think this story is just beginning.

I Thought I Was Cool

After Sunday School this morning, I was talking with our best friends at church, Jenny Lee.  She wanted us to know that she was going out of town [again] and wouldn't be at church the next two Sundays.  Now, for Jenny Lee, this is nothing out of the ordinary.  She has a son in Denver that she visits a few times a year, and another son in Florida that she also visits a times a year.  And in between those visits, she usually travels out of the country with another son.  But I digress.  This morning I asked her where she was going on this trip. She said Stuttgart.  In Germany.  To see the Rolling Stones.

I thought I was cool, but I'm nowhere near as cool as this 88 year old woman that is going to Germany to see the Rolling Stones.  I gave her a big hug before we left, and I kissed her on the cheek and told her that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like her.  She smiled and winked and said "You've got a good start."

A Sucky Saturday For Some

After I loaded my groceries into the Blazer in the Kroger parking lot, I noticed an interesting sight a few parking spots over.  Apparently someone had locked their keys in their car, and two guys were trying (key word) to use a coat hanger and a Slim Jim to get into the car.  I was intrigued and stayed there in my parking spot to observe.

After a few minutes, Guy #1 was going off on Guy #2, using lots of hand motions.  I kept on watching and to make the long story short, after my ten minutes of observation, they were unsuccessful in getting the car open.  Guy #1 got into his truck and drove off, and Guy#2 got on his phone and hopefully called someone that would be better at getting into the car than Guy #1.

Thank You, Friday

TWIT and I would like to thank Friday for finally getting here.  I only worked three days this week, but those three days were long and hard.

Thank You, Kroger

TWIT and I would like to thank Kroger for having the store brand of ice cream sandwiches on sale tonight.  You rock.  And I'm not ashamed to say that each of us had two.

I'm Back

I'm happy to report that I'm back after a two-day mini vacation in Cincinnati.  I met my Favorite Cousin and her Dear Husband there and we went to the Reds game last night and to the Cincinnati Zoo today.

The Reds beat the Tigers last night 9-5, and I got to witness in person Joey Votto getting a grand slam home run.  That's something that you don't see every day, folks.  I loved Great America Ball Park, and I will definitely be back again.  But hopefully on a game day when it's not 95 degrees with a thousand percent humidity.

And today's trip to the Cincinnati Zoo was great.  We went there specifically to see Fiona, the "baby" hippo.  And she didn't disappoint.  I got lots of pictures, most of them of her chewing on her mother's tail.

It was a short trip, and it was action-packed, but it was very relaxing.

Trivia Update

I am very happy to report that The Divas were on a winning streak and won Monday Night Trivia, and I also won a door prize.  We are happy to report that we had our highest score so far.  Nuff said.

The Heat Wave Can Stop

When I got up this morning at 5:45, it was already 79 degrees. Nuff said.

Happy Father's Day

TWIT and I would like to wish all of the fathers out there a very happy Father's Day, especially to mine!

It's Hot

It's no secret that I love the cool/cold.  Today as I type this it's 95 degrees with the heat index over 100 when you add in the oppressive humidity. My plans for the evening have changed.

I left the house at 10:30 this morning to do all of my shopping and errand running and it was hot as damned Egypt.  When I got home from errand running, I made sure the Girls had fresh cool water (with ice, I might add) and a full bucket of feed and now I'm inside in the cool a/c for the day.  Nuff said.

Flashback Friday

It's the middle of June, and that means that the Catholic church picnics are in full swing.

My mind drifts back to several stages of going to the Catholic church picnics.   Before I was a teenager, I would go to the picnics with some friends of the family, and we would collect the beer cans and take them to the recycling center the following week to make some good, easy money.

Then something happened.  I grew up.  And didn't visit the picnics until I was a young adult.  It was the place to congregate and see friends that you hadn't seen in awhile.  Even if you actually went to a picnic by yourself, you weren't alone for very long, because you'd always see 87 people that you knew.

Flash forward to today's picnics.  It's not nearly as fun as it was back in the day.  You hardly ever see anyone that you know.  And it's mobbed by tons of PATs.  And if you know me, you know I don't like being around a crowd of PATs.

Happy National Bourbon Day

TWIT, the Old Man and I would like to wish everyone a very happy National Bourbon Day.  You've been notified early enough to be able to celebrate.  Stop on your way home from work and pick up a bottle of TWIT's favorite bourbon, Bulleit, and have a shot or three.  I know we will be celebrating here at The Compound tonight.

Get Ready For National Blood Day

I'm giving you the head's up - tomorrow is National Blood Day.  The Red Cross is in mega need for blood right now, so if you can make the time, please go to the Red Cross tomorrow and donate if you can.   I stopped by a local blood drive the other day and am glad I did.  My Sweet Mother would donate every time she was able, and I'm trying to keep her legacy going.

One More Berry Good Day

Thanks to our local grocery store having berry good strawberries on sale, we will have another berry good night of strawberries with our church picnic cake.

On a side note - I don't envy anyone that wants to go to Hubers or other farms to pick strawberries, with all of the rain we've had and with all of the rain that is in the forecast.  Just saying.

Another Berry Good Day

We are still enjoying the awesome strawberries this season.  Last night we had some sliced berries on top of a cake that I won at a church picnic on Saturday night.  And as soon as I post this, I will be heading up to Krogers to get some more strawberries for us to have on the remainder of the cake.

It seems to us that the strawberries have more taste this year.  And we are sure glad.

Things Seen On The Side Of The Road On Our Way To And From Church

1.  A long black weave
2. A pink wig (like a clown would wear)
3. One black patent leather tap show (appeared to be small, perhaps a child's)
4. One toilet seat
5. A stainless steel/aluminum collander

Way To Go, Justify

TWIT and I would like to congratulate Justify on winning the Triple Crown.  He is a big, strong horse and deserved to win.  And no, I didn't bet on him in either of the three Triple Crown races, but I'm still glad he won.

Picnic Day

Today was the Zoeller Employee  Family Picnic at work.  We got to quit working at noon, and then go out and enjoy the festivities.  The favorite festivity of the picnic was the snow cone truck.  I'm not ashamed to say I had three snow cones today and they all rocked.

What A Week

This week at work has seemed like it was three months long.  Nothing really bad happened this week; it just has felt like an unusually long week.  But things are looking up. Tomorrow is the big company picnic, and we only have to work until noon and then we get to have all the fun we can stand the rest of the afternoon outside in the field in the 95 degree heat.

Happy Belated National Cheese Day

I apologize for being two days late, but I'd like to wish everyone a very happy National Cheese Day.  We should have been celebrating this momentous occasion on the 4th, but I'm late.  Better late than never.

So have some cheese tonight for a late supper or a snack to celebrate.

Happy Belated National Egg Day

I'm a few days late in wishing everyone a happy National Egg Day.  So please take time to celebrate today and/or tomorrow by having some eggs.  It doesn't matter how you have them - just have some eggs to celebrate.

Here's a recipe that I intend to try Saturday morning.  I don't know how it could be anything but good.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

I made a late night trip to Krogers (in keeping with my trend of going to Krogers once a day, but I digress) and when I pulled into my parking spot, I saw a family walking in to the store.  The mother was digging in her pants pockets and was counting change, and the father had a one dollar bill in his hand.

I got my few things I wanted (strawberry glaze, a green bell pepper and some bananas) and went to the self check-out lane and noticed they were in the self-scan in front of me.  They checked out and paid for a two liter of Pepsi and a gallon of milk using their dollar bill and change.  I immediately felt humbled; I was buying things that we didn't need and only wanted.  But then I walked out to the Blazer and saw them getting into an 2018 Dodge Charger, and I didn't feel so bad.

My Favorite Day of the Year

Ode to Billie Joe

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and we walked back to the house to eat
And mama hollered at the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said she got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge
Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
Papa said to mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas
"Well, Billie Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please"
"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow"
Mama said it was shame about Billie Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
And brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece of apple pie, you know it just don't seem right"
"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge"
"And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite?"
"I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite"
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billie Joe
Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round, papa caught it and he died last Spring
And now mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Are We Expecting Snow????

If you didn't know it was June 2 with temps in the upper 80's you would have sworn that we were expecting a big snow tomorrow by the way my Krogers was packed.  It was bigtime cray cray in there.  I'm guessing the big sale on Snapple and family-sized Cheez-its was the draw (only $1.99 a pack/box).
