Heatwave 2012: Day 4

I gave incorrect informat in yesterday's post, faithful readers.  It got up to 105 yesterday.  The Trane was running once again at full capacity and kept us fairly comfortable last night.  I kicked my ceiling fan on high and that did the trick for me.  The house was a bit warmer last night after the 'Rents had the kitchen heated up from canning 14 more quarts of beans, but there will be no canning or cooking today so we'll see if that helps.  Today's forecasted high is supposed to be 104.  All regularly scheduled activities at The Compound have been cancelled and we're staying inside today.  I'll keep you posted.

Flashback Friday

We're in the middle of a major record-breaking heatwave right now.  As I type this, it is 104 here in the 'Ville.  But I digress.  I'm trying to remember when I felt this hot or hotter, and nothing is coming to mind.  Not even the time when I was in Vegas at the end of July and as I stood on a corner waiting to cross the street and it felit like I was in the line of fire from a blowdryer. And not even when I was there in May and it was 110 and as we were walking to Luxor  and it felt as hot as if we were walking through damned Egypt. Sorry but I can't remember it feeling any hotter than it did today on my way home from work.

Household Tip Of The Day

First of all, let me apologize for not posting yesterday.  There was a whirlwind of activity from dawn till way after dusk.  I had to pick up someone from the airport and their flight was over a half hour late, and by the time I got home from that trip, I was just spent and went on to bed. But I digress.

I've used the same plastic glass for my morning coffee commute for probably 30 years now.  Yes, the glass is very stained but I wash it everyday and I don't worry about it.

I read something today that might be of interest to those that want to get rid of coffee stains in cups, mugs, and other containers.

Do you have a cup or travel mug that has been stained by your favorite warm beverage? Grind up some eggshells and drop them in the drinkware filled with warm water. Let it sit over night, and the egg shell will absorb the stain.

I've not used this yet, but when I do, I will report back my findings.

Heatwave: 2012 Day 1

The weatherazzi has everybody all geared up for the big big heat wave that starts tomorrow.  Today, the temps were in the mid 90's, but tomorrow the high is expected to be 104.  And they are calling for temps over 100 for the next 4 or 5 days.  Blech is all I have to say about that.

I've already made my executive decision, and with as much as I love my Bats, I don't think I'll be attending the game Saturday evening with temps forecasted over 100.  I'll stay inside and gladly watch reruns or play on the computer in the cool air conditioned comfort of our home.

If you're out and about tomorrow or the next few days, please, please, please be careful.  Drink extra water, and stay inside in the a/c if it is at all possible.

Farmtown 2012

I'm proud to report that the 'Rents had the first picking of green beans yesterday, and yesterday evening they canned 14 quarts of beans.  The count is in.  I'm not sure that we'll be able to break the record of 56 quarts of beans from 2011 but we will sure try.

Aren't these pretty?

And FYI, we're picking out one of the prettiest quarts and I'm entering it in the Kentucky State Fair.

In The Good Old Summertime

Summer officially started last Wednesday and boy did it start.  We've been in the 90's ever since.  They're calling for "cool" temps tomorrow and Wednesday with highs only in the mid 80's but Thursday through the start of next week they're forecasting highs of 100 or more.  Yep, summer is here.

Link Of The Week

There's been some talk in the news lately about how there have been a lot of UFO sightings recently. I've never personally seen what would classify as a UFO, but my Dad and Grandpa both saw something back in the late 70's that you could call a UFO.  Grandpa was a big joker and prankster, and if he'd said he'd seen a UFO, you would have thought he was just pranking you.  But Dad was with him and and saw it, too, and backed up his story.

But I digress.  If you're interested in recent UFO sightings, I've got a link for you.  Visit http://www.nuforc.org/webreports.html and you can find out if there were any UFO sightings reported in your area.  You can search by state, date, or shape of UFO.
