Pray For Me, America

I'm confessing to you, faithful readers, that I've got a bad attitude about something.  The fact that my Sweet Mother would have not even come close to having this attitude makes it even worse.

If you are a pray-er, please say a prayer that the Lord will help me work this and give me an attitude adjustment.

Stay tuned.

Way To Go, Nick

TWIT and I would like to congratulate the Cincinnati Reds on a 12 - 4 win tonight over the Phllies.  But more importantly, we would like to congratulate Nick Castellanos on his grand slam and seven - yes seven - RBI's tonight.

As soon as I post this, I will be going to the MLB website and voting for Nick for the All Star game.  And I urge you to do the same.

Go Reds!

Sickly Sunday

I'm not feeling up to 100% ready for action today, faithful readers.  At my beloved Bats baseball game last night, instead of following my instinct and getting their awesome fried bologna sandwich, instead I got a sausage pizza.  First of all, it was a small one - less than half the size of a frozen pizza you'd buy in the grocery.  I ate half of it, and it was horrible.  The sausage just didn't taste right.

I had just crawled into bed last night and turned out the light, only to get back up and run to the bathroom.  After throwing up for five minutes, I felt fine.  Actually, I didn't feel sick after eating the pizza - I just felt like I needed to let out a big ole burp.  I got back in bed, and tossed and turned all night.  If I look at the stats from my FitBit, I'd be surprised if it showed I got two hours of sleep.

So today, I'm doing nothing but resting.

Stay tuned.

Something You Don't See Everyday

I made my weekly Saturday trip to Krogers, and imagine my surprise when I pulled into the parking space and started to get out: there on the ground by my parking space was a black padded bra.  That's something you surely don't see everyday in the grocery store parking lot.  Nuff said.

Fresh Hair Friday

The Old Man and I got haircuts last night after work, and there's not much else that makes you feel happy than to have freshly cut hair - especially when you know you look good.  We owe it all to our hair stylist, Neecy.  I've been going to her for about 35 years, and in that time, she is the only person to have cut my hair with the exception of one time when she was out on maternity leave, and then her best friend who also worked at the same salon cut it.

Ever since the first time she cut and styled my hair, I told myself that if I ever won the lottery, the first thing I'd do is tell her she will never have to work again, with the exception of taking care of my hair.

Thanks again, Neecy.  You rock.

Throwback Thirsty Thursday

For the past few months, I've been making old school iced tea - heating up water on the stove and then dropping in the tea bags.  Before then, we took the easy route and mixed up pitchers of the instant tea, already sweetened and with lemon.  You just cannot compare brewed tea to instant.

Last night at supper, the Old Man and I were reminiscing about how Gram made the best sweet tea ever.  She hated tea and never drank it, but I am here to tell you her sweet tea was always perfect.  And in the spring and summer, she would make the infamous sun tea.  She had a huge glass jar, and she'd fill it with water and the tea bags and would sit it out on the driveway by the garage.  We now use that big glass jar for our opened bags of pinto and navy beans, but today, I cleaned out the jar, filled it with water and tea bags and sat it out in the same spot that Gram used.  Yep, I'm going old school.

Stay tuned.

Hopefully Wonderful Wednesday

I'm hoping that today will be a Wonderful Wednesday.  It's starting pretty good.  I have a pot of Great Northern beans cooking in the Crock Pot, and when I get home tonight I will make cornbread to accompany the beans.  Add to that the fact that it's 58 degrees and the sun is shining, and I've got myself a pretty good day going.

Terrible Tuesday

I know I'm probably one of the few people that still use a desktop computer, and I am paying for it lately.  It takes forever to bring up a page these days.  And I don't have the patience or want-to to unhook everything and take it to the computer shop to get it cleaned up/cleared up/fixed.  So till then, I'll just fuss with it and wait a half hour for it to bring up my blog.

Thanks for your patience, faithful readers.

Sunny Sunday

I really kicked it old school today.  As my Sweet Mother used to say, I cheated the electric company and hung our laundry out on the clothes line.  Now it's up to the sun and the wind to do their part.

Somber Saturday

My Happy Friday took a somber mode last night when I came home from work and had to perform yet another chicken burial.  Yep, once again, the mean bitches turned on their sister and killed her.  So now we're down to 2 Girls.

It will be interesting to see how this next round turns out.

Stay tuned.

Happy Friday

Just a few minutes ago when I was fixing the Old Man's breakfast, out of the blue he said (and I quote) "Sunday [Father's Day] ain't no big deal for me.  You make me feel like every day is Father's Day."

I don't care what kind of nonsense or problems happen today at work; that gave me more than enough happiness to get me through this day.

WalMart Wednesday

Pre-pandemic, when you went to WalMart on the way home from work, there were 2 checkout lanes open. Post-pandemic, that is still the case, and you can also add 2 out of 8 self-checkout lanes open.

It took me forever to get my two car sun shades this afternoon on my way home from work.  At one point, I was ready to just throw them on the Little Debbie rack and leave.  But I persevered.

I can only hope that the checkout lane situation will improve.

Happy Post National Bourbon Day

I talked to quite a few friends at work today who were feeling the after effects of yesterday's National Bourbon Day.  And it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't celebrating still tonight.  I know we are at The Compound.

Stay tuned.

Covid 19 Update

On Friday, Governor Andy lifted all previous bans and restrictions that had been in place since last March.  You could almost hear collective sighs of relief - bars, restaurants, and sporting events were able to be back at 100% capacity and you didn't have to wear a mask if you are fully vaccinated.

You could tell a big difference at the grocery store yesterday.  I still wore my mask, and will probably wear it until the percentage of Kentuckians who are vaccinated gets above 50%.  But I would estimate that at my Krogers, less than half still wore masks.  I just have to worry about me and keeping the Old Man safe.

Happy Birthday, White Castle

I wanted to get out of the office today for lunch so I took a quick trip to White Castle.  When I got back to work and was eating my sliders, I noticed that the bag, soft drink cup, and the cardboard boxes all said that it was White Castle's 100th birthday.  I admit I did not Google it so I don't know the exact date, but as of 2021 they are 100 years old.  They might be one of the oldest restaurants still in business, if not the only one.  Regardless, being in business for 100 years is damned impressive.

I remember my Sweet Mother telling about when she was a kid, they would get the Sunday newspaper for the sole reason of getting a coupon for 5 cent White Castles.

My favorite White Castle memory involves a family that was just like my second parents and siblings.  We would drive up to their house and then we'd all pile into the dad's work van (he was a TV repairman) and along with a Coleman cooler full of iced down RC Colas, we'd head to the White Castle about 20 minutes away.  Back then to a kid, it seemed like a half a day's drive.

Here's to another hundred years, White Castle.

Happy National Iced Tea Day

TWIT and I would like to wish everyone a very happy National Iced Tea Day.  I'm letting you know about this important holiday early enough so you will have time to either buy or make some iced tea.

At The Compound, we keep a jug of good old sweet tea in the fridge at all times.  And I filled up the jug last night in preparation for this holiday.

So go get a glass of iced tea and enjoy!

Another Cooking Update

So much for that, faithful readers.  My Crock Pot of pinto beans didn't turn out quite like we'd hoped.  But they didn't rattle in the bowl and they were edible.  But we learned a couple of things to try on our next batch.  I am determined to get a good pot of pintos just like Grandma made.

Stay tuned.

Another Cooking Update

I fixed one of our favorite meals tonight - Burrito Casserole.  We think it is the best recipe from TV cook Sandra Lee.  The hardest part of the recipe was opening up the can of enchilada sauce.  We both ate still we were stuffed.  And we also took a Zantac after supper just in case.

Cooking Update

I fixed a Boston butt pork roast in the Crock Pot, and I swear in court if you didn't have any teeth, you could have still chewed it because it was so tender.

I am gaining more confidence as the days go by with my cooking.   Thank goodness for my Crock Pot and my Air Fryer.

I'm Learning

The Old Man requested me to make a pot of his infamous Bud's Three Bean Soup aka Paula Deen's Taco Soup.  I was only happy to oblige. I made sure I had everything the recipe called for but I was short one can of diced tomatoes.  So I thought "what the hell" and used a can of stewed tomatoes.  Look and taste wise, there was no difference other than the stewed tomatoes were bigger chunks.  After doing a quick chop on them, you couldn't tell them from the diced tomatoes.  And the best part of all, both cans of tomatoes were low sodium, as was the chicken broth and corn.

It's been a year and a half since I assumed the roll of cook at The Compound, and I've been told by the Old Man and by coworkers who get some leftovers that I'm doing pretty good.

Way To Go Bats

TWIT and I would like to congratulate the Louisville Bats on their win tonight.  They beat St. Paul 6-3.  And I got to see Reds players Joey Votto and Aristides Aquino get some hits and RBI's while they were down from Cincinnati for rehab.

Happy National Donut Day

TWIT and I would like to wish everyone a very happy National Donut Day.

You've been schooled early this morning on this auspicious holiday, so you will not have any excuses to get a donut or three today.  I will be stopping at the local Thornton's convenience store for my free donut.

Enjoy!!

My Favorite Day Of The Year

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day

I was out choppin' cotton, and my brother was balin' hay

And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat

And mama hollered out the back door, y'all, remember to wipe your feet

And then she said, I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge

Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And papa said to mama, as he passed around the blackeyed peas

Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits, please

There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow

And mama said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow

Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge

And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And brother said he recollected when he, and Tom, and Billie Joe

Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show

And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?

I'll have another piece-a apple pie; you know, it don't seem right

I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge

And now ya tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And mama said to me, child, what's happened to your appetite?

I've been cookin' all morning, and you haven't touched a single bite

That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today

Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way

He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge

And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge

A year has come and gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe

And brother married Becky Thompson; they bought a store in Tupelo

There was a virus going 'round; papa caught it, and he died last spring

And now mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything

And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge

And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Yet Another Sleepless Night

I made sure I stayed awake last night while watching TV and didn't nap, but once again I didn't get a good night's sleep.  I know it's because I've got a lot going on in my head right now - for me and for two dear friends.  Add to that the fact that work is still crazy - dealing with parts shortages and us having to shut down production lines.

I'm hoping for a good night's sleep tonight.

Stay tuned.

Another Sleepless Night

I only took a 30  minute nap yesterday, but still had another sleepless night.  I've got a lot going on in my head right now - not just for me, but for my Friend Of A Lifetime, Diva Stacy.  She is taking early retirement this Friday, and is dealing with some major issues with her Sweet Father.

On a positive note, when I am awake during the night and can't sleep, I pray.

Stay tuned.
